Best way to get a 3 year old boy to follow a teacher?

3 year old won't stay with teacher/group?

We had a gymnastics class today where my 3 year old needed to stay with the teacher without me for the first time. He kept wandering away and the teacher would call him back and he wouldn't come. I ended up needed to go down and instruct him to stay with her several times. Is this normal and any suggestions to make this easier on both of us?

Well he is only 3, I swear the vast majority of 3 yr old boys are laws unto themselves! Is he actually wanting to go to gym class? Maybe she should be more engaging and appealing to a 3 year old. That is her job aftrerall. Presumably she is used to 3 yr olds. You might find he will get used to it after a couple of sessions and want to take part more actively when he knows what he's meant to do - he is likelly to be feeling a little shy for a start. You probably felt a touch embarrassed/frustrated as it was your kid. I always feel far more self-consious when it's my own not playing ball!

Elizabeth is right - someone offering classes to three year olds has to work like hell to keep them engaged and has to make expectations crystal clear in a kind way. This is the teacher's job.
