Obtaining a cell phone signal in a dead zone?

Good morning everybody. I recently moved from a town fairly close to NYC to a town about 45 minutes farther away from it (plus it's comparatively rural and at a higher elevation), and my prepaid T-Mobile cell phone no longer gets a signal. I'm trying to avoid going with Verizon, since they're obscenely expensive. Is there anything I can do short of switching to them in order to get a signal - i.e. some sort of antenna I can affix to my phone, and/or place in the house somewhere so as to get a signal? All knowledgeable and relevant feedback is welcome. Thanks in advance.

Update:

Joey, I've already looked into Verizon prepaid: roughly 2 bucks per day just to access the service. Suffice it to say that your definition of "not that bad" and mine don't match; that's strictly a last case resort in my case.

some, but very few, cellphones have an external antenna connector.

It looks like a tiny coax connection, which usually fits in car systems.

The cellphone can use the car antenna to have a better reach.

I don't know of any antenna's or systems for cellphones for a better reception.

I do know some companies sell $20 golden stickers for a better reception.

They do work, in general gave me 1 to 1,5 bar more reception on 5 bars (1 bar becomes 2 or 3; 3 bars become 4).

They work in the same way an RF receiver works in store product alarm systems.

    see link below.

*Edit: they do tend to wear out over time though, the golden paint wears off depending on how you use it, if you carry the cellphone in a pants tight pocket, they may last only 4 months, if you leave the cell on a closet and only keep it in the hand when you call they could last a good few years.(like 2 or 3).

    Works also with wifi.*

The Mobile phone signal (or reception) is the strength of the connection the mobile phone has to its network. Depending on various factors, such as proximity to a tower, the signal may vary. Most mobile devices use a set of bars of varying heights to display the strength of the signal where the device is located. Traditionally five bars are used. Generally, a stronger mobile phone signal is easier to obtain in an urban area, though urban areas do have some "dead zones" where a reception cannot be obtained. On the contrary, many rural or minimally inhabited areas lack a signal or have a very weak reception, but many mobile phone providers are attempting to set up towers in parts of these areas most likely to be occupied by users, such as along major highways. Even some national parks and other popular tourist destinations away from urban areas now have cell phone receptions. In an area where the signal would normally be strong, certain other factors may have an effect on the reception, thereby making it either stronger or weaker, or may cause complete interference. For example, a building with thick walls may prevent a mobile phone from being used. Many underground areas, such as tunnels and subway stations, lack a reception. And the weather and volume of network traffic may impact the strength. It is also possible to block the signal with a mobile phone jammer. However, these are outlawed in many countries.

Call and ask if you qualify for a signal booster
