question about vsp eye insurance? around how much would glasses, contacts, exam cost?
hey im new to the job world and i got guardian dental insurance and i think its comes with free vsp too. and the guardian insurance worker told me i'd tell them my social security number and tell them i have vsp to qualify or something. im going to go to a private office that accepts vsp. i want to get an eye exam, get 1 pair of prescription glasses and contact lens fitting and contacts. i dont have a credit card yet so i plan to pay with cash but i dont know how much to withdraw out of the bank to bring with me. i live in georgia, near atlanta by the way. or should i just go to lenscrafters or visonworks or something like that? could you give me an estimate of how much each would be when using vsp, if you have it? and if i used the insurance would i have to pay all the amount there and the insurance company would evaluate my claim and send me money back..? i dont know so how would that work too. thanks for your time in advance.

Typically, VSP will pay for either glasses or contacts but not both, unless you have a second pair plan.
The way VSP works, you will likely have an exam copay (for your eyeglass prescription) of anywhere from $0 to $25.
For glasses, your employer chooses what lens options are covered in full or which you get a discount on. VSP will always pay for single vision (like distance only), lined bifocal, or lined trifocal lenses made of plastic at 100%. Your employer may have chosen for options like impact resistant lenses, antireflective coating, transitions, to be covered. If they are not covered completely, VSP sets a maximum price that ANY VSP contracted optical can charge you, so it won't matter what store you go to, as long as they are in network. You will also have an allowance to use toward the price of your frames of anywhere from $105 - $140 (although I've seen plans of up to $300). Anything that you go over this you'll get a 20% discount on.
For contacts, you will have a total dollar amount to use toward the cost of the fitting (contact prescription) and boxes. You will have to pay any amount in excess of that allowance. Again, these allowances range typically from $105 up to $150.
In addition, there is sometimes a separate copay for your glasses.
As long as you go to an in-network doctor, you will not have to send in for a reimbursement from the insurance company. The doctor's office will give you the appropriate discounts and allowances at the time of service and file the claim for you. Once you pay for the exam services, the prescription is yours, so you can try to get a price once you discuss the specifics of your plan with the optical that is based on your VSP plan and then you can price shop the cash prices at Lenscrafters to see which is better. Again, any VSP optical will charge you the same fee for the same options because of the way that insurance works.
If you get your glasses prescription, and a contact lens fitting and a year supply of contacts, plan on bringing about $150 total. I would say the same would be true of just your exam and glasses. Total for everything, about $300-$400 should cover it all. Don't forget to ask if there are any contact lens rebates available. You can still send these in even if you use your insurance (VSP is cool like that).
Like the other poster said, until you have your exam and the optical knows exactly what kind of contacts and what glasses options you want and are covered, you won't get an exact price. But you can contact your human resources and they should have a plan outline with your specifics too.

VSP evidently has dozens of plans so it is hard to make any blanket statements about what they will cover. Your co-workers may give you some idea. In general, VSP is real insurance and will probably pay completely for your glasses or contacts if you stick with pretty basic stuff. It is worth using, so I would recommend going to a private practice doctor that accepts this. When you give the person at the doctor's office your information, they will get a print out of exactly what VSP will pay in your situation. Once they have this printout, they can give you more accurate information although they will still not know what kind of contacts you need, what kind of frame you will pick out or what lens options you will chose.
