Why do public transit buses not have air bags for drivers?

Recently I noticed that in Vancouver, BC, none of the buses have air bags for the drivers. Why is that so? Are they mandatory on cars? Thank you.

P.S. All the buses I am talking about are quite new, at least 2006.

Newton's Law of Motion. The mass of the bus will probably go through an object vs being deflected by that object. It's like the difference between running over a large rock vs a beer can. Also, the steering wheel on a bus is more horizontal than vertical (as on a car). So the bag would deflect upwards. Also the distance between the driver's face and the steering wheel would probably allow the bag to deflate before the driver kisses the air bag.

Yeah I agree, the same reason most buses don't have seat belts either. They're just massive vehicles and most won't go very fast within the city. So any accidents would likely result in way more damage to another vehicle than to the driver of the bus.

Cars are small and don't have much kinetic mass compared to the bus. Also, most city buses aren't designed to travel at around 70+ mph.

Because when you think of it, if you hit something, the damage will most likely be on the other car considering how large these buses are.

It's just a guess, but a good guess at that. :P

It wouldn't do anything on a bus. A bus is so much larger than pretty much anything it will run into so the people wont really take much of a hit.

    Yes its required for cars.
