  • Can an author be sued for mentioning the name of a copywritten work in their own work?

In the Canadian, American or EU legal systems:If I am writing a book, would I risk a lawsuit for writing "the book was Darkly Dreaming Dexter. He was completely fascinated by the series..." or something along those lines? If Darkly Dreaming Dexter is a trademark, would I risk lawsuit?

Thank you for your time beforehand.

  • Is it scientifically possible to force an earthquake?

I live in Vancouver, BC and we are expected to have a major earthquake sometime in the future. I was thinking, if we were to completely evacuate the area and build a large enough bomb (H-bomb or whatever), could we force the earthquake to occur and release the tension on the tectonic plates thereby potentially saving hundreds or thousands of lives? Please do not question the practical side of this idea. I am well aware of the practical problems. I only want to know if it is scientifically possible.

  • Will the engine of a standard petrol car freak out if I give it ethanol?

Simply enough, North American vehicles run on petrol that has an octane rating of 91 I think. If I use ethanol, with (according to Wikipedia) 129 octane, will something bad happen to the engine? Will it just run less efficiently or will it break down? I am not talking about any other part of the car than the engine. I don't care about fuel lines, etc.

  • Can NaOH be produced from an aqueous solution of Na2CO3?

The same way an aqueous solution of NaCl can be used to produce NaOH and Cl2 through electrolysis, can an aqueous solution of Na2CO3 be used to produce NaOH and something else? Has this been done commercially? Thank you before hand.

  • Why do public transit buses not have air bags for drivers?

Recently I noticed that in Vancouver, BC, none of the buses have air bags for the drivers. Why is that so? Are they mandatory on cars? Thank you.

P.S. All the buses I am talking about are quite new, at least 2006.

  • What is a species of algae that grows best at low water temperatures?

I'm talking about temperatures around 5-10 C. Please exclude any that would release neurotoxins (e.g. Anabaena) or that would otherwise be harmful to surrounding organisms (The algae would be separated, but the water would be shared.) Please also include whether the algae grows in fresh water or sea water. Thank you very much.

  • Is US presidential law discriminating?

I don't know the details, but I have learned that in order for a person to become president in the USA, one must be born in the USA. Wouldn't that be considered a type of discrimination? I know it's part of the constitution, but isn't it time for the constitution to be renewed?

Could any single element be transmutated into hydrogen through fission, could hydrogen be turned into any single element through fusion? Other elements? Could, in theory, we go anywhere in the universe and take any single abundant element plus energy and create any element we could possibly need?

  • What are these random phone calls?

My house receives random phone calls from an unknown number at very random times. It happens quite often, and when I answer, it's just a *beep* *beep* type thing. Vancouver, BC area, Telus provides my phone service. Right now I received such a call and it's 12:35 at night and people in my house are sleeping. Can I end these calls somehow? How?

The beeping is about the sound of a voice mail beep, and it's on about a .5-1 second interval.

  • Are the air brake systems of the UIC and AAR interchangeable?

Suppose I am running a Canadian/US/Mexican railway, and all my freight cars are the standard AAR with everything. Suppose I am short on locomotives, and I don't like North American locomotives so I want to rent from MRCE Dispolok ( http://dispolok.com/ ). Would I be able to connect the air brake systems, or would I have to change the locomotive's controls/valves/etc. If the systems in general are the same, work on the same basis, would it just connect, or would I just need to change the air couplings between the vehicles? Websites with pictures and explanations would be helpful.

P.S. I know about all the other incompatibility problems, do not lecture me about it. I only care about air brakes right now.

  • Can a railed vehicle be made both FRA and UIC safety rules compliant?

What would be involved in making sure they are compliant with both? For example, if Canada decided it wants to switch to UIC rules rather than the very FRA like Canadian rules, would CP/CN for example be able to acquire vehicles that are compliant with both? Would there be a lot of design work involved, weight added etc.? Thank you very much, and every answer (that is an actual answer) is helpful, even if it's a straight out yes. Sources would be very helpful, and if you have book recommendations please share them with me.
