Do you see extreme nerds and extreme sports fans as the same?
They both religiously attend events based around their respective obsessions, dishing out tons of money for access, not to mention travel and lodging in many cases.
It's not uncommon to see either in flamboyant and detailed costumes at said events, that no doubt took lots of money and time to put together, let alone put on.
They both have their wardrobes full of clothes that somehow center around their obession.
They both find little else to talk about with other people, and therefore relate closest only to those who share their obsession--and therefore think less or ill of those who don't share the obsession.
They both have massive mental encyclopedias of useless knowledge about their obsession.
Extreme nerds are always checking in on websites like AintItCoolNews and SuperheroHype and the like to keep up on what's going on in the sci-fi and anime and comic book worlds, etc.
Extreme sports fans are always fighting over the sports sections of newspapers and know all the guys on Sportscenter by their first names.
The nerds waste hours, days, and sometimes weeks playing MMORPGs.
The sports fans waste hours, days, and sometimes weeks playing Fantasy Football.
You could make this same comparisson to any group of people that's very into a particular medium of popular culture, but I think it's the sports fans who seem to understand the least how they are exactly like the comic book-reading, Star Wars-costume-wearing, Lord of the Rings-character-bio-memorizing "nerds" in spirit and practice.
What do you think?
Sounds to me like I hit a nerve, Kreeos.

You make some pretty good points there
The funny thing is, that the sports fans are among the quickest to make fun of the people who like Star Trek and Star Wars so much. Isn't it just as silly to obsess over the athletic abilities of other people who are not your friends or relatives? why not get some exercise instead of living vicariously through Tom Brady, LeBron James, etc.?
I am both a moderate sports fan and a minor science fiction enthusiast, for the record

Theres a ton of similarites but I wouldn't say there the same, because alot of extreme sports fans don't have the same interest as nerds. And nerds don't really have the same interest as fans. But I have to say I fight over sport teams, and I know all the sportcenter anchors names lol, and Im only 14 but that doesn't make me an extreme fan because I want to be on SC when I get older, but anyway there alike because they do have obessive tendices that are alike.
