Why is fluoride bad? Is fluoride bad for your teeth? Or bad for drinking?

Hello,

I know fluoride helps teeth to prevent cavities. But, I have also heard that in too much is bad for your health in general. So is it bad for the rest of the body, except teeth?

Any reliable sources?

Thanks.

Update:

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR ANSWER.

--Onlymatch4u, I like your answer but your argument has many fallacies.

For one, the National Kidney Foundation not against water fluoridation, it is stated in their website "The National Kidney Foundation has not issued specific recommendations regarding fluoride intake and kidney disease due to the limited available research on the topic." http://www.kidney.org/atoz/content/fluoride.cfm There is an article there that says different areas in the US have different levels of fluoride. "However, fluoride can also enter public water systems from natural sources, including runoff from weathering of fluoride containing rocks and soils and leaching from soil into groundwater. Fluoride pollution from various industrial discharges and emissions can also contaminate water supplies."

I Wrestle Polar Bears for Fun is right though, fluoride can be quite toxic for our body.

Jon also brought out that there is a distinction between FLUORIDE and FLUORINE.

Fluoride is one of the most toxic substances on earth. In fact, fluoride was used to make the Atomic Bomb. It is what Teflon is made from. The fluoride they put in water supplies comes from the toxic waste of making fertilizer. It makes teeth brittle, causes fluorisis that discolors teeth that cannot be fixed once colored, it damages kidneys and the National Kidney Foundation now is totally against any water fluoridation, and it causes your body to become deficient in IODINE. Many thyroid problems come from the fluoride people are getting from toothpaste, tap water, stick-proof cookware, and is in things like green tea, beer, etc.

If you look at a toothpaste tube that has fluoride in it, you will notice a warning that says keep away from children. The reason? Depending upon the age of the child, eating part of contents of that garbage will kill them. The older the child, the more of the tube they have to eat to kill them. It is that poisonous. Here's the typical warning: "WARNING: Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. In case of accidental ingestion, seek professional assistance or contact a Poison Control Center immediately."

Fluoride has been tested on humans for the purpose of treating osteoporosis. The theory was that fluoride would strengthen bones. What the researchers found was that it did increase bone mass; however, the bone was much more brittle -- leading to a dramatic increase in hip fracture. Numerous studies have linked long term consumption of fluoridated water to increased risk of hip fracture. Think about all those old people that have weakened bones and get fractures easily and have been using fluoride toothpaste for years, drinking fluoridated water, etc. Heavy metals, like fluoride, are cumulative. They build up in the body from consuming it. Nine of thirteen studies show a correlation between hip fracture and fluoridation, including four published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in the last five years.

Research has shown in numerous studies that fluoride is a mutagen (genetic damage), a carcinogen (cancer causing), and cancer promoting in laboratory cell studies, animals, and humans. In 1990 the Congress-ordered National Toxicological Program (NTP) found bone cancers in male rats.

The test animals, in the words of the board certified pathologists "were awash with disease." The high dose animals had kidney failure and cancers of their lips, cheeks, throats, livers, and bones. The highest rates of cancer were found in the highest dose animals. The lucky rats and mice that drank the distilled fluoride free water had no significant disease.

Eating, drinking, using fluoride products, fluoridated water supplies are all VERY STUPID THINGS TO DO with NO good science backing up it's safety in these things. Fluoride does NOT prevent cavities. That is a myth with no science to back it up. It makes the teeth brittle.

Adequate stomach acid does far more to prevent plaque build up than fluoride ever could imagine.

EDIT: "@ poster" Website talking about National Kidney foundation change of heart: http://www.thenhf.com/article.php?id=1251

    Another website: http://redpillreich.blogspot.com/2008/06/kidney-fo...

The National Kidney Foundation is dancing all around this issue due to pressure from many city governments due to legal issues, but they know and we all know that fluoride in water that is given to people with damaged kidneys can be a death sentence. If you have any doubts about their position on this, call them and ask them if you should give a person on a kidney dialysis machine water with fluoride in it. That should settle your anxiety about this issue.

EDIT: Here's a very good website and article that clearly gives you 50 reasons NOT TO FLUORIDATE or use any fluoride products: http://www.fluoridealert.org/50-reasons.pdf It is fully referenced with several HUNDRED credible sources that should keep you busy for quite a while giving enough evidence to support NOT USING ANY FLUORIDE products in anything. There are many alternatives to fluoride and for anyone to say "How can we get along without fluoride" is just showing ignorance of the subject.

    good luck to you

The first thing all medical students learn is that there's a safe dose of everything, and there's a lethal dose of everything. Fluoride is no different.

In moderation, fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel, making them more resistant to cavities. Too much fluoride exposure leads to fluorosis, wherein they become mottled and weak.

As for fluorine itself (fluoride is a diatomic molecule; two fluorine atoms bonded together), it's among the more versatile elements in chemistry, having key applications in such areas as refrigeration, manufacturing, radiology, anesthesia and cooking spray. You literally wouldn't want to live in a world without fluorine!

Fluoride is good for preventing plaque in your teeth, but too much of it, especially in children, can cause the teeth to become weaker. Drinking substantial amounts of fluorine, however, (and I mean such as downing a bottle of Oral B) will produce toxic effects.

Fluorine, on the other hand, (which is the basic form that fluoride comes from) is usually what is attributed to diseases. It's in a lot of chemicals that are already supposed to be detrimental to your health, such as pesticides. I believe that the worst cases are seen in poorer countries due to water contamination.

Fluoride is moderately toxic and bad for your body (on a scale of 0-5, it's toxic "level" is 4), and I think especially bad for your brain. However, it is good for your teeth and that's why there is fluoride in tap water although I wouldn't drink it in excessive amounts because of that.

Don't confuse naturally occurring fluoride (aka calcium fluoride) with the many different derivatives of sodium fluoride.

it's toxic if ingested in significant amounts. in other words, don't eat your toothpaste, spit it out.
