R&P: Do you like rap?
I've noticed a lot of metalheads and classic rock fans trash rap offhandedly. I can't say I agree with it. Some of the best music of the past 20 years has been rap.
What do you think?

Yes. Liquid Swords is a top 5 album ever for me. Hell, Kanye West released one of my favorite albums ever recently even..... I don't know how there ended up being so many misconceptions and double standards against hip hop.

I love rap! It is one of the most innovative genres to come around in 30 years! It has had such a strong influence on culture in general. I love metal, rock, alternative, easy listening, jazz, etc., but I must say rap is one of my favorites. What I love about rap is that it isn't just one dimensional. I think that is what a lot of the metalheads and rock fans think of rap. I mean, you have all types of rap you can listen to. Old-school hardcore like N.W.A. or Public Enemy. The early 90's G-funk era like Dr. Dre. Rap intertwined with jazz like A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots. Even the weird, experimental rap like Kool Keith. If your opinion of rap is just coming from the rap on the radio, then you need to look deeper than that. There aren't too many new rap artists I like, but rap is one of the genres that definitely had a huge impact on music.

It depends. I love rap with good lyrics. But I'll never listen to a rap song just because of a beat, no matter how catchy it may be. And if there's autotone, I won't even give it a chance. This is why I generally prefer rap from the late 70s to mid 90s. But there are some great rappers still out there today too.

I do. Some of the best social commentary of the last 25 years has been exposed through rap music. Sure, it's not for everyone and some of it is kind crappy, but those who trash it are either narrow minded and/or have no clue what they're on about.

Well, classic rock is definitely my favorite genre. After that, it's fifties rock. After that, seventies/eighties punk.
BUT...
There's a lot of hip hop music that I absolutely love.
Mostly stuff from the late eighties to the mid nineties.
I don't have any more complaints about today's hip hop than I do about any other of today's genres.
Much respect to the Crimson King.

Some of it , yeah.
I like Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco most I think.. and a little bit of Mos Def among others.
I wouldn't call myself a fan though

i personally think you are wrong but quite frankly there is no such thing as universally desirable music. everyone likes different stuff for different reasons. i only listen to metal, never old stuff though, only recent to semi recent. when people trash music it is because they are trying to change the person into someone that can envy or approve of their own desires.
