Gender representation in games?
I'm writing an essay about gender roles within games (like how female characters are shown), but it has to be a "structured critical response" so I need an actual question to answer. Could anyone help me come up with an interesting question to answer that isn't too vague?
Thank youuu :)
Yea sorry, it is video games

Ask what roles are represented as being female and what roles are represented as being male. For instance, in the Final Fantasy games, females are usually depicted as being weaker fighters than males, and more in the roles of healers, up to at least Final Fantasy X. I refused to buy any more FF games after that. Generally, though, in the FF games, if a female had a special technique, it generally wasn't combat based.
And here's something to ponder: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thedud... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8ZVZRsy8N8
Video games in general tend to have male main characters. Females are there as secondary or backup characters, or as the love interest for the main (male) character. Count the number of male characters vs. female characters in any best selling game. Discuss the roles of the male vs. female characters. Discuss the frigging appearance of the few female characters. For instance, most women are put off by hypersexualized images of female characters...Lara Croft's and Tifa Lockhart's bodies and outfits. In fact, one of the pre-release ads for FFVII had Tifa in the ad, with bedroom eyes, saying "Hey big boy, do you want a piece of me?" Square DOES know how to create female characters who are attractive but not overly sexualized, for instance, in Crono Trigger two of the three main female characters are dressed attractively but modestly.
Most non-casual games are still made by and for males.

Are you talking about video games? I think the appearance of women in these would be the most consistent critique. Women can be shown in all sorts of ways in things like The Sims to Lara Croft but whenever you get an action game or a fighting game you seem to get a very sexy appearance. There is also a large market for dress up and make up games for teenagers which has all female characters. I think you could make a good argument that female characters are usually slim and attractive with stylish clothing and many games make them very sexy while male characters vary according to attractiveness and wear understated clothing.
'Are the physical attractions of women given much more emphasis in video games than those of men?' Yes they are with some exceptions you will wish to note.

(The World's Greatest Anti-feminist mounts the podium, this time for his tenth Gold Medal at these inaugural Gender Olympics - and lowers his head once more to receive the medal - and the applause of the adoring crowd. He raises the Medal high for all to see, this a crowning moment in his life and his career as an anti-Feminist...a career that has suffered its ups and downs, but which has finally paid off with this..his greatest achievement at the highest rank of Gender Olympics.
And now...ladies and gentlemen... may we all rise for the National Anthem for The World's Greatest Anti-Feminist - "For God's Sake - Menarovia".
The music swells...one moment here..he's doing it again! The World's Greatest Anti-Feminist is raising his arm in the clenched fist of the Man Power salute! Oh, ladies and gentlemen...this is disastrous for these Games..twice in the one evening The World's Greatest Anti-feminist has given the Man Power salute which looks remarkably like an erect...well, never mind what it looks like......and the crowd are loving it...they've all broken out into the national anthem, and the strains of "For God's Sake - Menarovia" are filling The Grapplerdome. The crowd is running wild, and are bailing up the Swedish representatives here as we speak and chastising them severely.
What else can we do but join in!).
