When one thinks of tie dies,
they might think of the Grateful Dead,
when one thinks of the Dead, they think of Jerry as a leader of the Dead.
Isn't it funny that Jerry didn't wear tie die. He always wore a black shirt.
Do you think he was trying to say something by wearing a black shirt only? Did Jerry ever comment on his choice of wearing only black shirts?
Also, he made an exception one night in 1985, when he wore a red shirt. Has anyone heard Jerry talk about why he wore a red shirt that one night?
OK. Maybe he didn't ALWAYS wear black, but don't you think it was more than a coincidence that he wore it 95% of the time he was on stage?
So, to reword the question...
Change the word "always" to "95% of the time"
What was the significance, to Jerry, of wearing a black shirt? It had to be significant to him in some way. You don't just reach in your rainbow colored wardrobe and pick out a black shirt by chance 95% of the time. It meant something to HIM, what did it mean? Catch my drift here?

I don't know how weird rumors like this get started. This is the second time this week someone has asked about Garcia "always wearing black"
He didn't always wear black, pure and simple. He also wore blue, violet, beige, brown, and a lot of other colors. Just Google "Jerry Garcia" on Google images, and you'll see him wearing different things. yes, he wore black a lot, but he wore other stuff too. In concert, and on his off time.

The significance of only wearing a tee shirt and slacks was because he didn't believe in dressing up. People admired him for it. It was simple yet outstanding. And here's a fun fact: Bob Weir hated tie-dye.
