Why did Emperor Julian (Roman Empire) fail to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem?

Emperor Julian of the Roman Empire tried to reestablish the pagan system of worship in Rome (after Christianity had become the official religion), including rebuilding the Temple. It says he did this to prove the Bible wrong. How do you feel about this, and is there an official reason why he tried twice to build it and fail both times?

Update:

Thanks Scooter. It isn't everyday someone disrespects their forefathers. I hope when the baby in that picture turns 50 years old, he doesn't feel the same about you!

Update 2:

Sorry, Chris. I got that from the "Famous Men of Rome" by John Haaron and A.B. Poland. I have the audio version of it, but it came from the chapter on the Fall of the Western Empire.

Update 3:

Yeah, I don't think he really understood too much about Christianity. The chapter almost hints that he may have thought he could somehow prove Jesus wrong when he said not one stone would be left... Strange thing is...it had already happened under Titus. So, I am puzzled as to his motive for this.

I am not sure of the historical facts on that please post your sources. In my opinion the jews had been dispersed by then and islam was beginning its spread. With the additional conflicts taking place and the demise of the Roman empire lack of support canceled his plans all combined with the awesome power of God to control human events.

I think you answered the question, in that he wanted to prove Jesus wrong !

He finally gave up when blue flames burned the workers after earth quakes destroyed previous attempts, It just wasn't going to happen.

although at the first destruction a few stones where left standing, not until Julian had them cleared to build foundations was every stone removed, so he fulfilled the prophecy.

A side note many so called Christians support the re building of the third temple God knows why since it will resume the slaughter of animals for no reason as that sacrifice ended and is of no avail any more.

Still we know it will be re built because the Anti christ will have a throne as he will come from the jews and proclaim himself god, and for a time will be accepted as the long awaited messiah.

By the way Nice to see a sensible question in this forum.

    God be with you.

God will decide when the "end of times" are to come. Rebuilding the temple is one of the requirements for this to happen. It just wasn't the right time.

as far as proving the bible wrong, I have never heard of that and I don't see how rebuilding the temple would prove the bible wrong. Rather it would prove the prophesy to be true. I guess him 'not' being able to do so could prove it wrong but we still got some time.

Since it happened more than 50 years ago, I'm not sure I care a whole lot.
