Why do people call it "domestic violence"?
It's violence. And the context in which it occurs is irrelevant. It's almost as if the domestic prefix somehow lessens the severity of the act and excuses it.
Why is that?

I've been married long enough to understand the different dynamic.
But don't get 'not all violence is the same'. If I were to punch my wife what would make it different to you doing it? Either way she would get hurt.

"Domestic" means "In the Home", crime occurring inside the home (a symbol of safety and love usually) seems worse than crime committed elsewhere. However, you are correct in that the severity of the crime is no different, so should not be treated like it is.

Different dynamics when it occurs between "loved ones" at home. Not all violence is the same.
