Should I format my WD Hard Drive?
I have a WD My Book Essential 500 GB hard drive. I plugged it in to my USB port. but under my Computer tab, there is a X over the Hard drive and there is a Virtual CD with the WD SmartWare Software but I know that it eventual makes you pay for it and Im more used to using the Windows Backup And Restore. Should I format the hard drive so that I can use the HDD like a big CD and not all that software?
BTW. I know that the Hard drive should work on my computer. The box says that its for Windows XP+
I have Windows 7 Home (something) 4GB of RAM, Intel core 2 duo and its a Toshiba Satellite A505

If you cant access the drive format it.
If the software is just a free trial, find some free backup software like DriveImageXML it does:
>Whole OS backups.
>Access any files from the backup to restore
>Drive to drive copying

go and check the event viewer. if any log mention in warning or error post here. otherwise don't worry about that.
