When doing flambé, do you HAVE to heat the liquor before putting it into the pan?

Can't you just chuck your shot of room-temperature spirit into the pan and just flambé? Won't the high heat of the pan already be enough to warm it? If I'm getting it wrong, please explain! Thanks!

    Why would you heat the alcohol?

    You need to be using a gas heat and tip the pan so the flame catches the alcohol on fire to burn off.

    no, you do not have to heat the liquor before hand.
