Perhaps she dislikes you because of your behavior. Is it possible that you have treated her poorly in the past? I'm curious as to how she "made" you watch TV in the basement. One person can't "make" another person do something they choose not to do. You must have voluntarily walked down the stairs. What can you do about the situation? Treat her politely. Pretend "as if" you like her. Compliment her. If you want her car, house, pool, food (and daughter) be gracious, respectful, kind and MOSTLY a pleasant person to be with. Labeling her a cow monster doesn't help. If you dislike her so much go elsewhere. If the situation has been like this for 28 years something needs to change... Perhaps it is your attitude towards her. It is difficult to like someone who treats you poorly. It is a two way street.

This is between you and your wife. Your MIL is not going to change, but apparently you have tolerated 28 years of poor treatment, and your spouse has allowed this to happen. A little late to worry about it now, don't you think?
