I usually place the piece of wood in the bathtub, turn the shower on and set it to top temperature, and give it a good rinse.
I forgot to mention, to get the tannins out, place the wood in boiling water.
(Woods sometimes release tannins which makes the water look like tea).

Boiling it is ok. It will get most of the tanning out but until the wood is pure white (and you can't do that it will destroy the wood) it will always turn your water brownish. But if you do boil it do so a couple of times then after you place it in your tank do your normal water changes. 10% every week and a 50% change once a month or so. Should help cut down on the tanning

I would say use boiling water. When it's cooled repeat two or three times. This is much faster than soaking it in cold water. Using the cold soak method, I was changing the water in the bucket every day for weeks and it still turned the water brown when I put it in the tank.

You need to boil it a few times to get the tannins out unless you want them.
