Carb Intake: Good or Bad?

I generally get around 80-140 carbs in a day. Almost all of my bread/carb products come from whole grains or whole-wheat sources...hardly any white products when I can help it. However, I'm not sure how much is the average or recommended dosage. I'm 18, 5'7" and 165-170 lbs. I follow a meat-free, dairy-free diet and I'm working towards losing weight. Please help?

Update:

Well I'm trying not to go over 1000cal a day. I know some say that's bad, but I can't imagine eating so much food in one day. My percentage of carbs is at 66% for today, and my protein and fat is 12% and 33%, respectively.

Calories come from Fat, Protein and Carbs. You need all of them. The way you described your body type is similar to mine so this is what I found out from my college nutrition class so its what im gonna do to. You never want to go below 1200 calories a day. So you take how many calories you eat a day. For example

Fat= 9cal per 1 gram. Protein is 4 per 1 gram and same with carbs.

This is how much you should be getting of all this stuff. The lesser side if you are trying to loose weight.

    Fat: 20 - 35%

    Protein: 10 – 35%

    Carbohydrates: 45 – 65%

Say you eat 2000 calories a a day

So you wanna cut carbs? So you would do 45% instead of 65% so multiply. .45 times 2000. Thats 900. Then 900 divided by 4(calories in carbs), that would be 225 carbs you should be getting a day IF you are doing 2000 calories a day. If you are loosing weight, I would suggest(im not a professional, but I got an A in Nutrition) 1500 calories a day, Plus exorcise. Which would be 168.75grams of carbs you need. So actually you want a little more.

Remember Carbs are energy. If you work out, you want to eat right after you work out because thats what trades the fat for muscle.

Good luck. Hope I was clear enough, im sick so I might not make any sense

You are missing the entire point. The question is, are the carbs coming from food? Nuts contain carbs, but are powerful sources of food and minerals. 8 oz of raw nuts are fairly complete meal. Eat some fruit a little later. Drink lots of water and you will be surprised how much energy you will have and how your weight will gently melt away. Much better if you can get clean well water.

i,ve never done well on low carb diets. i get too weak, and tired. low fat seems to work well. i hope you,ve done your homework on this regimen. you,ve eliminated a huge source of proteins, amino acids, and essential fats and calcium.

It should be about 50-60% of your daily calorie intake. There are other factors that determine how many calories you should consume.

    Good carbs
