What do you feel is the best way to deal with a bullying situation?

Imagine you were a principal and had two students in your office, one a bully, the other her victim. How would you handle the situation to ensure that the bullying did not continue?

I would not have the two people in the same room.

I would ask the victim to go play with his or her friends while I needed to "talk to someone".

I would have a short conversation with the "bully" to evaluate him or her, and then decide if I should refer/send him or her to a school or private therapist for treatment.

Because bullying can only exist in an environment where there is a majority-acceptance, I would then review the programs that are in place at the district to see if they are addressing the general population (students and teachers) at the district.

Source(s): I have a degree in psychology and worked with anti-bullying task forces in the LAUSD.

If you punish the bully they go even harder at the victim. The VICTIM has to stand up for themselves or they always will BE ! Your so called, intervention is useless. As this will make the victim feel others will interfere and rescue them. making them even less likely to stand up for themselves. So the victim becomes more cocky, and brings it on themselves. Catch 22 !

You ball-out the bully. Tell the victim to smarten UP. The rest is nature-all ! Some life lessons, are just tough !

You can't ensure that, but you have to be diligent in punishing it and making sure victims are encouraged to report it. No one should be subject to bullying.
