Should I get 1GB or 2GB 6950?

I was looking into getting a new graphics card and decided on the AMD Radeon HD 6950. Here is the problem: the card comes in a 1GB configuration, and a 2GB. As of right now I do not see any advantages of getting the 2GB over the 1GB. Are there any? Is it only for future proofing? I buy a new card every 3-4 years, so would the 2GB be necessary?

Update:

Sorry guys, I guess I should have specified earlier. I will be running dual-monitors, but I will only have the current game I am running open. I never have open a game and a browser window or photoshop etc. And the budget is part of the question. If I don't have to spend the extra $30-40 that would be great, but it's sounding like that's the better option. Thanks!

You only need 1GB+ if you are going over 1920x1080 resolution. Also if you didn't know, you can unlock reference 6950's into 6970.

I did it to mine. It runs exactly like a 6970. The architecture of both GPU's are EXACTLY the same besides the 6970 requires a 6+8 pin power connecter while the 6950 requires a 6+6.

Video RAM is widely misunderstood. If graphics cards were cars, the amount of video RAM is the size of the gas tank, not the size of the engine. More video RAM allows you to go further, not faster.

There's no advantage to the 2gb card unless you're running multiple monitors, that's what the additional VRAM helps (keeping gameplay smooth at extremely high resolutions) For a single monitor, the 1gb model performs identically.

In fact, at resolutions of 1680x1050 or lower only 512mb of video memory is every used.... there's no advantage to 1gb cards over 512mb models unless you're running at resolutions of 1920x1080 or higher.

Ok, get the 2gb one then. No problems with it at all. But if its out of ur budget then get the 1gb one, it will be enough for you.

    hiya.

it all depends on what screen resolution you will be using, if its around 1600 x 1200 then one gig is fine, a lot higher and you'll need the 2 gig.

Always go with bigger. Because you will at some time in the future need the larger space.
