Him has a good answer as far as it goes. When he says DAB the pipe dope on the end, he should have said, make sure there's a good amount of pipe dope on each end of the pipes before inserting and tightening. I usually use my index or next finger to mash it into the threads so it's sure to get down in. Then reassemble and tighten, then check for leaks by brushing each joint with a mixture of liquid hand soap and water. At this point bubbles are not good.

Shut off the gas at the meter. Get a pipe wrench and start unscrewing the pipes. Buy some pipe dope from your hardware store about $3. dab on the ends, and reassembly everything. Turn the gas back on and check for leaks with soapy water at each joint. That's it.
