Cloning a laptop hard drive?

I am upgrading my laptop hard drive. I have searched for information concerning copying *everything* to the new drive, but most guides/programs are intended for desktop PC's with multiple drive bays. To be clear, I need the new drive to behave identically to the old drive in terms of operating system and files. What is the best way to do this?

To clone a laptop drive, you will need another drive, preferably one setup as an external drive in an enclosure that you can swap out, or the new drive already installed and the old drive setup in the external enclosure. Then you will need either cloning software to clone the drive directly through Windows or a bootable CD that can be used to setup cloning.
