24 valve 5.9 liter cummins to a 9 speed transmission?
I am trying to mate a transmission out of a semi to a 5.9 liter dodge cummins. This is just a random project, just for fun. I am completely unable to find any kind of information on this topic. I am not sure about which transmission I will use yet, either an 8LL 8 speed, or just about any 9 or 10 speed transmission that I want. I already am aware of the fact I will have to run air lines. I already have an air compressor on the truck. I'm not worried about the small things, but I can not find anywhere any type of adapter plate/ bell housing that supports this idea. Not completely sure how I'm going to get the clutch to work either. I am just wondering if anyone knows of some type of company that might make these type of parts. Or if there is a website that I can go to in order to find them.
I have seen it done a few times,so I know it can happen. just didn't think of asking the people how they did it at the time. I know it is a strange project, but that's why I want to do it... because it isn't something you see often.

well semi trucks do not use a oil bath to keep them cool. now to your question there were some older trucks back in the early 80's and mid 80's that had small detroit and cummins engines you may find one of those like old straight trucks and use the bell housing but you would probably have to make an adapter plate to mount the bell housing to your motor like a half inch plate steel. now if yor dodge has a manual tranny in it remove the tranny but keep your bell housing it should be four bolt to the tranny some of the older fords l9000 series had a 5and 4 transmission the main box was a 5 speed that would work but the 9 and 10 speed would be to big. but if you found someone to weld cast iron aith out warping it you could cut out the center of the 9 speed bell housing and cut you bell housing center out and weld in the ten speed center section and that would work but then you input shaft would be too long so you would need to space it out and the input shaft would be to big to except your clutch. but you could probably find a clutch or have one made to fit jack shaft and that would work. and use an adapter to your bell housing... then the problem would be length of tranny and weight those weigh around 800 lbs or better depending on what one you use and tranny mounts and crossmembers and the shear size would hamper most people of doing that. then the yoke on drive shaft would be to big so one would have to be made to fit your smaller drive shaft. but the ones i have seen are dummie shifters they buy a shifter knob that came off a 10 and have there shifter bent to look straight and put knob onit to look like a 10 speed or 9 . good luck if you make it happen i will look around net to find something more definate for you because i like your eagerness to do something different......another thought would be to find an older truck like a 80's volvo or freightliner with a 210 cummins harvest motor and tranny and put it your dodge it would be a manual motor no electronics and the 210 cummins is a small motor in size not much bigger then the one you have. justa thought. and you would have everything you need.
