"The law should be enforced at any cost" - Agree or Disagree?

For example, according to an Essex MP, Travellers that have illegally built without planning permission (on land they own) should be evicted, which could cost the council as much as £10 million. Is this cost justified?

That is the rub isn't it. There is not enough money in the world to prevent all crime. In fact, most everybody is a criminal of one sort or another too. Under the law there is no need to intend to break traffic laws and we all do from time to time.

    Disagree.

If I recall from my youth, there was an episode of Powerpuff Girls in which a group of criminals steals a million dollars from a bank. In order to prevent there escape, the Powerpuffs ended up having to destroy a bridge. The Girls were kicked out of the town for causing the city tens of millions of dollars despite the fact that they apprehended the criminals and saved the million. I'm aware that this example is ridiculous, but is was the first example that popped into my head of a situation where the cost of enforcing the law was more than the benefit of it being enforced.

No. I don't agree with that at all. In all law there should be some common sense.

If it doesn't violate the 3 precepts of common law:

    1: Don't harm anybody

    2: Don't harm their property

3: Don't be fradulant in contracts

then it shouldn't be enforceable. The example you give is a tax scheme pure and simple. Nanny Gov isn't get her permit money so you can't build on your own private property.

Should ANY law be enforced at ANY cost? No.

PS I can't remember who said this, perhaps Abraham Lincoln or Thomas Jefferson, 'if you sacrifice freedom for security, you have neither'.

I think the law is an ends to a mean....a way to prosecute wrongdoing. But I don't think it defines absolutely what evil or wrong is.
