Why does the US do business with communist China, but not communist Cuba?

The US has helped make one communist government rich, but not Cuba. What is the difference? I am no fan of the Castro boys, but why do we help the repressive regime in China?

Update:

I understand the manpower in labor China possesses, but I am speaking politically. A US citizen can get arrested for visiting Cuba, but is free to go to China. To the person who says China isn't communist, you fail. To the person you spoke about Cold War history, I got it. I am good. I am looking for an answer that differentiates the two countries politically. Anyone?

We have an embargo against Cuba that is popular with the large Cuban population in Florida. Cubans are single issue voters who vote Republican because they support the embargo. The Cubans would quickly become Democrats if that one issue were removed. Florida is the must win swing state and if the embargo were lifted we would never have a Republican President again.

Castro stood up against the "empire". Even though the United States could have taken Cuba, it would be an unpopular move. The US used propaganda, soldiers, and anything they could think of to take Castro out of power. It did not work, thus there is some hate that.

Also maybe socialism can work in Cuba? If the United States was to trade with Cuba it would help the Cuban economy. That might show that a leftist government can work.

Also just because China calls themselves Communist, doesn't make them Communist.

Because the Liberals got really pissed

    When Castro embarrassed JFK

And since they controlled the entire government at the time.

They passed laws banning anyone in the US from doing business with Cuba.

    2. What differentiates the two countries ??

About a billion people and nuclear weapons.

You don't treat a country with a billion people and nuclear weapons, the same as you do a small little island.

Notall countries are the same, nor should they be treated the same.

China is not true communist and so is Russia. You fail for not studying it before you open your prejudice mouth. Read the cold war and you will know why we not trading with Cuba. The US govt does not consider China a threat but a neutral country but on the outer surface they have to smear China name to make the public forget the blunders at home.

Because of something called "Electoral Math."

Cuban-Americans oppose lifting the embargo against Cuba.

Cuban-Americans are often the margin of victory in Florida.

Florida is often the margin of victory in US Presidential Elections.

    There you go. That's why.

JFK embargoed all trade with Cuba.

    Including the cigars.

    Because China has more money

Because they have a lot of money. Sadly, money comes before principles in this country
