How can a foreigner (an American) get a job in Malaysia or Singapore?

I'm an American guy who's married to a Malaysian woman, and her entire family is in Malaysia (and some cousins in Singapore). I've been to Malaysia several times, love it, and would move there in a heartbeat so she could be close to her family, but I've heard it's very difficult for a foreigner who isn't exceptionally highly-qualified to get a good job there.

Can anyone describe the official processes and/or paperwork one would need to go through in order for a foreigner to get a job in Malaysia (or Singapore, which would be close enough)? If you've done it, could you describe your experiences and what it's like to work there? Have you faced any particular challenges?

If it helps, I work in the field of graphic design/desktop publishing, and can also do editing or copywriting work.

Thanks... or, terimah kasih, to all who reply! :-)

Update:

I should add that I'm not having a problem finding open positions in Malaysia—I've been using several good job search website for that. The problem is securing one of those jobs as a foreigner, and the bureaucratic barriers to doing so. So you don't need to reply with links to Malaysian/Singaporean job search sites. :-)

Looks like you have so many questions.

In short let me address your question as follows:

    1. Singapore is foreigner friendly country and welcome foreign talent.

    2. Check you eligibility in mom.gov.sg (enter some education/background details). You will now in an instant if you are eligible.

    3. Start looking for the job and once you get it, the company will sponsor you for your work/employment pass.

    4. Complete all formality and you are there on your way.

Look for job in private firm in Penang, 99% it is based on merit and no racial involved.....oppss sorry there is a quota for Bumi, ok never mind the lower level group will make up the quota, you are a professional no need to compete with them the Indon and Bangla are. it is easier for a muslim to get a PR here, we even gave PR status to Indon terrorists, no reason you can't
