  • Why does Yahoo! keep ruining their best sites?

First Flickr (though the free 1TB of storage is nice), then Fantasy Football, and now Answers. In their rush to be "new" and "different," they've ruined the whole Answers experience. Where can I find a list of my recent answers which are still open and/or in voting? The "My activities" tab simply shows things like "You answered a question" or "Your answer was picked as best," but doesn't show WHICH question it is -- you have to click through to see the question. It also doesn't indicate the status of a question (open, resolved, or best answer). Frustrating!

Anyone else hate the new Answers?

  • How can I disable the Research Pane in Microsoft Word 2007 and 2010?

In my job, I routinely have to resize table columns very precisely, which requires the use of the Alt key while dragging the columns. However, Alt+left click also brings up the Research Pane, so it's constantly popping up while I'm trying to resize table columns.

I'd love to be able to either disable the Research Pane entirely or just reassign it a different keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+left click would be fine) so it won't annoy me all the time. I've tried uninstalling the "Research Explorer Bar" from Office, but it's apparently not the same thing, as the Research Pane still pops up.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

  • What could possibly be the answer to this Blade Runner trivia question?

I'm trying to enter the Sony Video Unlimited Scavenger Hunt contest. You have to answer five questions in order to enter. I'm on Question #5, which reads:

    Step 1: Guess the Movie

The memorable score for this 1982 sci-fi classic was composed by Vangelis, but a complete soundtrack was never released until 1994.

Step 2: Find the answer on that movie page

What is the last name of the second person mentioned in the cast?

While I don't have the Video Unlimited movie page for Blade Runner (the obvious answer to Step 1) up in front of me, I've tried entering every character's name (last and first) and cast member's name (last and first), and none of them are "correct." If they aren't referring to Rick Deckard/Harrison Ford, Rachael/Sean Young, Gaff/Edward James Olmos, Roy Batty/Rutger Hauer, Pris/Darryl Hannah, who could they possibly be mentioning second in a list of cast members? (I've tried every name I can find on both imdb and Wikipedia!)

    Any suggestions?

  • Why won't my PC boot up?

    System details:

    - Asus P4P800-E Deluxe motherboard

    - 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 (Socket 478 Prescott)

    - 1 GB DDR400 (2 x 512MB)

    - ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (AGP)

    - Western Digital 160GB SATA hard disk

    - ASUS DVD-ROM drive

When I power up the system, the POST screen appears and seems to detect all of my hardware normally. Then nothing happens. If I try to enter BIOS setup by pressing DEL, "Entering BIOS setup..." appears on the POST screen, but then nothing happens. If I press F8 for boot device selection, the same thing happens: "BBS setup selected..." appears, but nothing happens.

I've changed the CMOS battery just in case, but it still does the same thing. I've checked the hard disk on my newer machine, and it's fine (it's also blank--I formatted it in anticipation of installing a new OS on the old machine). I'm also quite sure the DVD-ROM drive is fine. The keyboard lights light up and as I mentioned, the system does respond to pressing DEL or F8, so I assume the keyboard is okay. The power supply is fairly new and has more than enough power (500W) to handle my system's setup.

Any idea what might be going on, and how to fix it? I'm trying to use this ancient PC as a very basic HTPC to stream Hulu, YouTube, etc. on my TV. If I can get it to work, I might even add a TV tuner and upgrade it to 2GB and use it as a basic DVR.

Thanks in advance for any useful suggestions! :-)

  • How much should I sell my old PC for?

I definitely know that I won't get much for it. It's more a question of whether I should sell it, give it away on Freecycle, or donate it to Goodwill. Here are the specs:

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 @ 3.0 GHz (Socket 478, Prescott, with HyperThreading)

    Memory: 1 GB of DDR-400 (2 x 512MB, dual channel mode)

Motherboard: ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe Socket 478 ATX motherboard

Video: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (AGP 8X) with 128 MB

Hard disk: Western Digital 160GB Serial ATA

Optical drive: NEC DVD+/-RW drive (doesn't seem to recognize blank DVDs anymore)

Monitor: NEC Multisync FE991SB-BK 19" CRT monitor (still works great, 1600x1200 @ 75 Hz)

    Power supply: OCZ StealthXtreme 500W

Case: Antec full-tower server case (black, don't recall the model number)

Keyboard: IBM 104-key PS/2 keyboard (black)

Mouse: Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse (black, USB or PS/2)

No OS or software, though I'd be happy to put a Linux distro on it or install the buyer's own Windows OS. Thoughts on pricing?

    Thanks so much!

  • How can a foreigner (an American) get a job in Malaysia or Singapore?

I'm an American guy who's married to a Malaysian woman, and her entire family is in Malaysia (and some cousins in Singapore). I've been to Malaysia several times, love it, and would move there in a heartbeat so she could be close to her family, but I've heard it's very difficult for a foreigner who isn't exceptionally highly-qualified to get a good job there.

Can anyone describe the official processes and/or paperwork one would need to go through in order for a foreigner to get a job in Malaysia (or Singapore, which would be close enough)? If you've done it, could you describe your experiences and what it's like to work there? Have you faced any particular challenges?

If it helps, I work in the field of graphic design/desktop publishing, and can also do editing or copywriting work.

Thanks... or, terimah kasih, to all who reply! :-)

  • Serpentine belt replacement on 2005 Scion xA?

My local oil change/tire place has recommended that they replace the serpentine belt on my 2005 Scion xA. I read another answer here (from ChadF) that the 2005 xA has a timing chain, not a belt. Are the timing chain and serpentine belt different parts?

If so, when should the serpentine belt be replaced, and what signs should I look for to know if it needs to be replaced (noises, behavior of the vehicle/engine, etc.)?

    Thanks so much!

  • Problems with HDMI cable on PS3?

I have a PS3 Slim connected via an HDMI cable (Mediabridge) to my Samsung LN-T4061F TV. Periodically (1-3 times in an hour, maybe?) the picture will go black for about 1-2 seconds, then come back. Sometimes the picture will look very green for a moment, then go back to normal.

I haven't tried using a different HDMI cable yet, though that's high on my to-do list. Has anyone else had these issues and, if so, did you find it to be the fault of your PS3, your HDMI cable, or your TV? Any speculation?

    Thanks!

I'd like to learn Cantonese Chinese (not Mandarin), but haven't been able to find anyplace that teaches it. I'm looking for a formal setting, like a community college or language school, preferably in Montgomery County or in the District, and preferably an evening course. Any help appreciated!

  • How to coordinate document production better?

In our department, we produce reports written by various people, and coordinated by a country manager for that particular report. The country manager provides original text, tables, and figures for the report, which our editor reviews and edits, and then we "format" the various elements, meaning we clean up the text using Word paragraph styles and so on, according to our style manual, as well as formatting tables and figures (graphs) to make them consistent and compliant with our style manual, and put it all together into a cohesive publication.

The process usually doesn't go very smoothly, however, with several rounds of corrections before and after formatting, and sometimes there's confusion about which chapters (each chapter is its own Word file) have or have not been edited.

Is there a software package that would allow us to better organize our document production workflow? One that might enable us to "check out" files while they're being edited or formatted so that no one else can make changes or copy the files to work on?

We've thought of organizing things in folders, but people can still make "unauthorized" edits to the files, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • How to update my ASUS Eee PC 1000HE's BIOS (running Windows 7)?

I installed the Windows 7 Release Candidate on my ASUS Eee PC 1000HE netbook, and it's been great. However, ASUS just came out with a new BIOS update, and to my knowledge, there isn't an updater program that's compatible with Windows 7 (or, for that matter, Vista).

I have the ROM file for the update on a USB flash drive. Should I make the drive bootable and use an old-fashioned DOS updater? Is there a way to update the BIOS from within the BIOS setup screens?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Can't get Harvard Graphics Advanced Presentations 3.0 to work in Vista?

My company has standardized on Harvard Graphics AP 3.0 for use in making charts/graphs/etc. for the reports we produce. We upgraded to Vista in the last year, and since then, we've had to run Harvard in Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 with a Windows XP virtual environment. The program (HGAP) installs on Vista and starts up, but as soon as you open a presentation file, it crashes.

We've tried "Run as Administrator," we've tried the various "compatibility modes," all to no avail.

If you've managed to get Harvard Graphics AP 3.0 to run reliably in Vista, I'd love to know how you did it. Thanks!!

  • Which pain reliever is the most gentle on the liver?

I recently had a physical and my liver function results were very high (ALT and AST). I've recently been taking 3-4 tablets of ibuprofen a day, for about two weeks, due to headache and fever. I believe the high liver test results are due to the ibuprofen. What pain relievers (acetaminophen, aspirin, naproxen, etc.) are easier on the liver?

  • Toshiba REGZA 42XV540U - has anyone seen one yet?

I'm planning to buy my first high-definition TV, and after lots of research, I've tentatively chosen the Toshiba REGZA 42XV540U. Has anyone knowledgeable about HDTVs seen this model in stores yet and, if so, what were your impressions of it?

Based on what I've seen and read online, it seems to be the best "bang for the buck" in its size (42"). Opinions welcome!

  • How to remove a leaking jar of Kraft Marshmallow Creme from a cabinet shelf?

We just bought a house and found that the owner had left behind a partly-empty jar of Kraft Marshmallow Creme that has turned into a white and brown gooey/sticky mess, and the jar seems permanently bonded to our wood cabinet shelf. What can we use to unstick it? I'm afraid to pry it off with a knife or screwdriver because the jar may break, causing an even bigger mess, not to mention that glass shards that would still be stuck to the shelf. Help! Thanks!
