Is Cameron's view on AV merely that he is scared the Tories will lose out?
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20110218/tuk-coalition-...
"Mr Cameron said his three broad objections to AV were that it ensured an unclear voting system, meant an unaccountable political system and produced unfair outcomes."
So 1) Unclear voting system, when it is basically almost the same as what we have now.
2) Unaccountable political system. So i guess it would mean that you could get a PM who cannot get the majority of seats in the house of parliament then, like when in 2010 labour and lib dems got 52% of the vote but Cameron got the chance to destroy the economy!
3) Unfair outcomes, like in Plymouth when they had to use a pack of cards to decide who would be MP, yeah, that's fair Cameron. At least with AV you would avoid that sort of nonsense.
Is Cameron just scared that people will feel more confident in voting for other parties and the Tories will find it much harder to get into govt?
People's complaints about AV are exactly the same for first past the post. The only difference is that it allows individuals to be more democratic. Instead of having to vote for those who might win in their area, they can vote for who ever they want first and if they choose to vote second, they can vote for who they think might win their local constituency. This will give smaller parties more power, but at the same time, it will still continue to give "strong govt" if what we have at the moment with first past the post is "strong govt"!

Well it's clear the Tories would be the main party to lose out as they are not really anyones 2nd choice. The 2nd choice for Labour voters is usually the Libdems (although that may now change), the 2nd vote choice for most Libdem supporters would most likely be Labour. Then it's just a case of where the smaller parties votes would go like UKIP, BNP, Independent and green, but I can't see any of them voting for the Tories. As the BNP and UKIP both want out of the EU, then they would most likely be each others 2nd choice. So Cameron is not just scared the Tories will lose out, he knows the Tories will lose out.

I can't read Cameron's mind, but I agree that AV is a ridiculous voting system for a general election.
If you want strong govenment then you should keep first past the post.
If you want a more representative system of peoples votes, then P.R. has some merit.
AV has no merit at all.
AV is not representative of anyones idea of good governance.
AV is not proportional
AV does not deliver strong or competent government.

What is really stupid is to be having this debate without include the fate of the House of Lords.
If it is decided that the second chamber should be elected and should continue as a revising chamber then it would make sense for it to be elected by PR and the House of commons to continue to be elected by first past the post. That would give you the best of both worlds. You would have a government with a strong sense of direction, and a revising chamber which would resist damaging changes for unrepresented groups.

No he is scared that if Clegg loses the vote the rest of lib-dems will force Clegg out and the coalition will fall apart and as Cameron only interest is to be Pm he will be hoping but won't admit that Clegg wins the vote.

I doubt it. I think he's much more straightforward than that. To the best of my knowledge he has not deliberately lied about anything or covered up any mistakes he may have made. Personally, although I do not agree with all of his policies I think by his nature he is a great deal more straightforward than almost any other leader we have had in modern times.

The question is do you want the person you vote for be elected or the person 2nd in line which you have to vote for be elected?
I wouldn't want my second vote to count. Who would? If I wanted the second candidate to be elected I'll vote for them as my first.
