Seniors: What Is An Effective High Blood Pressure Medication That Keeps Blood Pressure Down?
At this point I am thinking about going with an alternative high blood pressure medication from the health food store.
I have been on Lisinopril for about 2 1/2 months, and it lowers my blood pressure down some but it does not CONTROL it. It also has given me a dry cough and cold hands and feet.
My doctor had me on other blood pressure medications before Lisinopril but they did not work well with me. Definitely don't want any beta blockers.
I go for my walks, changed my diet to low sodium food, drink a lot of water, drink juice from the health food store, stopped smoking and still my bp is not under control. It's much lower but it's not under control
I first found about my hbp in July of 2010. Had a stent put in both of my arteries above my kidneys in November, my heart is fine..no blockage there. My blood pressure is much lower but today I walked to the store and when I got back home it spiked to 201/90. Don't have a clue why. I got it lowered but I am thoroughly frustrated with this.. 80% of the time it's good then it will spike.
Questions: 1. Can you have a stent TAKEN OUT of your body because I don't think it's working for me.
2. I know we all have different body types but is there a blood pressure medication that is really good at lowering the blood pressure and keeping it low?
3.Since I stopped smoking I have a desire to eat something sweet after I eat. I am not a diabetic(was tested for that) but could the sugar in the candy I eat affect my blood pressure readings? I love sherbet and gum drops
I see my doctor on the 23rd of this month and I am going to have him take me off the Lisinopril and put me on something else, but I want to give him a name.
I said I was THINKING about going the alternative route...I would never stop my meds before talking with my doctor first and getting his advice. DaisyMay, I DO NOT have high blood pressure due to the reasons you listed but I'm pretty certain I have high blood pressure because of something else going on in my body.
All the women in my family have always worried A LOT and thought the worse, usually over nothing. Of course, I'm the same way, so my blood pressure MIGHT be because of that.
I will talk to the doctor about that on the 23rd.
No one answered my question about having a stent taken OUT of the body.
To the person who commented about "people on here are not doctors"...I know they are not doctors but some people have had the same experience as others and can give some helpful insight.
If you don't have an answer to my questions please skip over it. I do not need anyone to tell me "no one on here is a doctor". Get a grip people.
I forgot to add I also take multi vitamin/mineral pills, vitamin D and garlic pills every day. My doctor knows this and says it's ok.

Before I stroked I had been on many different medications for hbp, afterwards they found that Norvasc worked for me. You may have to try several before your body reacts to one. All the other things help keep it down-especially sodium-for me it is kryptonite. My mother recently had her stent taken out. She is diabetic and also has HBP. She said it was interfering with urination- she has to work harder on monitoring her sugar and sodium but has not found any difficulties since it's removal.

I dont know a holistic alternative. You might go to a health food or vitamin store and ask them. You can check Dr. Andrew Weil's website. He is the famous proponent of natural remedies at the University of Arizona in Tucson. I take Lisinopril also in 10 mcg. and my BP is steady. It may be caused by some other medication you are taking. Get another doctor's prognosis. Look up the different BP meds and see their side effects before you visit this doc again.

For the homeopathic approach, research on many of the sites available with information.
Absolutely request your Dr assess and perhaps prescribe something different. I take Lisinopril, for me it is fine, I do plan to see if I am having afternoon higher values. What works for one often doesn't work for another and sometimes you do change more than once to find what works best for you. Sometimes what has worked for you seems to be having less effect. Your Dr. needs to be the final word. Remember, you are shooting at a number as close to 120 or below systolic and below 80 diastolic. 140 over 80 which in the past was considered within normal range is now determined to be too high for a sustained BP.

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

Throw the cigs away, start walking and lose some weight. It can't hurt you.
Good luck......
Wow, Capricorn, you have added a few more facts since I first read your Q, some 14 hours ago, sorry to sound so "flip" about a very serious problem.
I too, have the HBP problem. I take a single serving of medicine (the name escapes me now), and it's the lowest doseage available.
I have had bp issues for about 30 years now, and the Dr. tells me to lose about 50lbs (25+kilos).
That's easy to say, but a difficult to do, as I have weighed 200 lbs + or - 15 lbs for a lot of years.
I hope it goes good for you, and your able to shake off the hbp issues.

Only a Physician can make the choice regarding medication. And yes, most blood pressure medication has some side affects initially. Most people do adjust to this. You can talk to your Doctor about meds that don't cause sexual problems.

If you're going to the health food store, buy a book on herbs...
Cayenne, Garlic, Gotu Kola, Kelp, Black Cohosh, and when you get the chance eat the watermelon seeds instead of spitting them out. The others are made into a tea or some you can buy by the ounce and cap them yourself. Remember, herbs don't do what prescription drugs do, they urge your body to take care of the problem, so it will take longer for you to see any results. Patience and diligence will work best for herbs.
Speaking with a nutritionist and/or herbalist is a good thing to do.

I took a lot of different kinds of BP meds before I got Atenolol. That is the only one that didn't give me either a blinding headache or a cough. My blood pressure is fine now, and the stuff is very cheap. My dad takes Lisinopril and it works for him. Everybody is different.

For years I took one called HCTZ. It worked well, had minimal side effects and was very cheap. Then I moved and had to find a new doctor. First thing he did was change medications. Before I knew it I was on very expensive meds with many side effects and not one but two. The second was added to combat the side effects of the first. I don't think doctors like cheap meds that work well. But I'm probably a little paranoid.
