Why are horse people so behind in technology?

I work in technology and also ride horses, and I've noticed that the whole horse industry seems to be way behind in technology. If a barn even has a website, it's usually uninformative and out of date, and online tack shops never seem to have as good basic customer service as non-horse shops (simple things like confirmation e-mails, ability to track your order, shipping based on how much it costs them to ship the item instead of based on the value of the item, etc.) Horse shows still make you mail in forms instead of entering online. My barn still uses photocopies of photocopies for boarding contracts (I actually re-typed the boarding agreement for them because it was so hard to read)

Do you guys notice the same thing? Why do you think horse people don't use technology better?

Update:

I don't think horse people are any busier than other people...

And it's not the local tack shop's orders I want to track- it's the online tack stores.

Not all websites are like this. Ive found a few really good informative ones.

Horse people are also not the only ones "behind" in technology, its just what you noticed. Because you are a horse person yourself you look at those websites, but how many dog wesites have you seen? How about small businesses?

I do notice this, but in many toher areas too. I think you mainly noticed it in this area because its those type of websites youre usually looking at.

Websites are expensive to build and maintain. You have to pay for hosting each month or year if you want to have a website free of advertisements like "Get rid of belly fat." Then you have to have someone that updates the events, news, horses for sale, etc. This isn't free.

Its probably cheaper for horse shows to not have to pay an online processing fee per transaction for every person that enters. Then there's the option to mail in a check in necessary. Then there's also a paper trail to know who all the entrants are.

"Online tack shops never seem to have as good basic customer service" because they have a person making $8 an hour to listen to complaints, file return orders and tell people where their orders are or which shipping company to contact. The online tack shops may even outsource their customer service to a call center because it would be cheaper than paying for their own call center. A lot of those you're talking to are customer service reps, not likely horse people... and dealing with rude and snarky people all day wears you thin.

As for tracking with the online tack stores, there should be a shipping confirmation number that comes with the electronic receipt, it will tell you whom they shipped the item out to (likely UPS, USPS, Fed Ex) and it will have the tracking number, you need to track through with the appropriate website.

Horse people are busier than other people as a horse is hardly low maintenance. I'm also reasonably up to date with technology, but then i'm a lot younger than a lot of people who would be designing the websites. I've also seen some very well designed tack sites.

we spend more money on our horses than on any type of technology. im not sure about the online tack stores though. Maybe they are just busier?

no i dont think so that is probally where you live, the barn i ride updates its website every week, and its not just tack shops its all small buisnesses, you cant track your order at a local pet shop? right?

and maybe they have more important things to do.

I think the two main reasons are:

    1) Horse people are busy and don't always have enough time

    2) Horse people tend to not be wealthy because horses are extremely costly, so they may not be able to afford to hire someone to do it like big show barns can.

They are to busy taking care of their horses, their tack and customers.

horse people? you make us sound like we're amish. many are way too busy to sit at a computer all day. baling, cleaning, breaking, riding, teaching, showing. and many more things occupy us "horse people".

we are too busy taking care of our horses. and it costs a lot of dough, so we don't really have enough money for updated, expensive technology! :) nice question!

    Happy Trails!
