How to change a waking up early habit?

Since my father died 6 months ago my mother wakes up every morning at 04:30 and this really annoys her as there is nothing she can do about it, She has experimented with different times going to bed and 9pm or midnight makes no difference to the time she wakes, so it's obviously a habit not dependent on how much sleep she has had. Does anyone know any tips for breaking the habit? She's tried just laying in bed but that doesn't break it

Update:

I should add, although she's obviously still in mourning, she isn't depressed and has a social life and is very active physically. Recently she and I spent an entire day on our feet shopping and both went to bed 10pm - I slept ten hours, she was up at 04:30 as usual

Update 2:

She doesn't have any trouble getting to sleep and sleeps well, just always wakes up early. Staying up until 2am won't help even if it makes her sleep later because then what is she going to do until 2am?

Tell her not to eat or drink anything past 7:30 and go to bed every night at the same time, I know alot of older women go to bed around 10:00, lay off the caffeine after noon and try exercise, (walking) everyday, when she goes to bed make it dark as she can and no noise, tv or radio, no alarm clock, specially if there is a light on it! If this keeps up go to the Doctors and get something to help her sleep, they have some amazing stuff out there! Good Luck and Sweet Dreams!!

Have her try going to sleep later...maybe 1-2am. I'm sorry about your dad, btw. I can understand why that'd mess with her sleeping pattern. =(
