its a play on words better of dead
if you are better off doing something else you will benefit more frome something else
example
im getting no work done here i would be better off at home

I've never heard of the show, but the term "better off" refers to someone or something after an event or happening..... U can be worse off or better off depending on if the outcome is bad or good. If a girl dumps a cheating boyfriend, u might say she is better off without him :-) or if she was a wonderful person and people thought she was out of his league, u would say he is worse off without her! Hope this helps :)
