Algebra1 help please?

Word problems give me headaches, lol.

Kelly made candies with two different types of chips. There were only 19 total chips in all of the candies, but there were also 1 less potato chips than peanut butter chips. How many peanut butter chips and potato chips did Kelly use?

Any ideas? Thankyou !

    1)first state what represents what

    kk so let x= number of peanut butter chips

    let y = number of potato chips

    2) Make the equations

    so:

    a)x+y=19

    b)y=x-1

    or in words:

    a)peanut butter chips + potato chips = total chips

    b)peanut butter chips = potato chips - 1

    3) Substitute Equation 2 into Equation 1

    we know y = x-1

    so the first equation will now be

    x+(x-1) = 19

    instead of the y

    4) Isolate x

    So u have to move -1 to the other side to make it +1

    so now u have

    x+x = 19+1

    x+x=20

    2x=20

    now divide bothe sides by 2

    x = 10

    5) Now make your final statemen

    x= 10 which mean 10 peanut butter chips

    y=x-1 = 10-1= 9

    therefore, she used 9 potato chips and 10 peanut butter chips

    hope I helped! :)

    what Bryan C said is simpler and may work for this word problem, but i gave you the proper procedure to answer this for any word problem that is like this one. and Matt also did it my way, I just explained it lol.

    10 peanut butter

    9 potato.

    it may seem like a lot of words but when you simplify it, it is just asking for two numbers that equal 19, and one has to be only one digit less than the other.

    so, 10+9=19

    and 10-9=1

    p is potato

    b is peanut butter

    p + b = 19

    p = b - 1

    (b - 1) + b = 19

    2b - 1 = 19

    2b = 20

    b = 10 peanut butter

    p = 10 - 1 = 9 potato
