What causes a team to collapse so badly ?
What causes a team to suddenly fold up after an otherwise successful season ?
Dallas is 1-8-1 in the last 10, Colorado has gone 1-8-1... Atlanta has gone 2-7-1.
Three teams that had better than a .500 win/loss ratio for most of the regular season, completely folded up for no apparent reason, and have nearly ruined any chance at a playoff appearance; Dallas could turn it around... Atlanta doing so would be rather a stretch. New Jersey going to the playoffs would seem more likely at this point than Atlanta...
What happened ?

Who knows....the coaches message gets stale, the players get caught in a funk, once a few things go wrong they tend to spiral out of control

Who knows? Everyone hits a slump. Sometimes injuries lead to a team slumping, especially if the injured player is a star player (*cough* Pittsburgh Penguins *cough*). Maybe trade rumors or actual trades affect a team's morale. Of course, sometimes the trade affects a team positively, as when the Caps traded Chris Clark for Jason Chimera last year and named Alex Ovechkin captain, after which they had a really good rest of the season (until they crashed in the playoffs). Sometimes it doesn't go so well, as when they traded Tomas Fleischmann for Scott Hannan and subsequently had a December to forget.
