Your dog sounds like our male Pei. Shar Pei are people-dogs, in the sense that they love and protect their immediate family members. She probably follows you around the house. But some can be clingy and have separation anxiety. Whining is an indicator of this, she is trying to get your attention. Best thing to do is ignore the whining completely (unless it's obvious that it's time to feed her or take her outside).

You could also desensitize leaving. Don't make a big deal about leaving, get up and leave, then come back in, ignoring her. Don't pay any attention to her when you come in. Repeat this, leaving more and more time in between away trips. Eventually she will get it. Consider also crate training her if she's not, so she will not search all over the house for you while you are out. Shar Pei do best when they have regular schedules and boundaries. If you regiment your schedule, she will learn what time you get up, what time you leave, and when you come back. For boundaries, don't let her sleep in anyone's bedroom or bed. She needs to respect your space. They are very smart, smart enough to know they don't always have to listen to you, but still want to please.

Also, make sure she gets a lot of exercise. Pei don't need that much, but she will be less anxious when you leave if she is more tired. Leave her toys, nylabones, kongs, etc., to occupy and distract her. Our male is obsessed with his toys, so we hide them all over the house for him to find and retrieve. Every day we come home, all his toys are always all in the same room.

As for getting her spayed, that won't change her attitude, but it might reduce the behavior since her hormones will change. But it won't be a complete fix. Technically she is a teenager at 1&1/2. She might not grow out of any puppy habits until she is almost 4. They never grow out of the stubbornness though, sorry.

    I have a Shar-Pei who'll be 2 years old in July.

You say yours is obnoxious, attention seeking and whines when left alone.

Pei are very much "people dogs" and don't like being parted from their owners for too long. How many hours do you leave her alone for each day?

Pei also are very eager to please, they learn extremely quickly. How much praise and reassurance do you give her when she's been "a good girl"?

In what way do you consider her to be oboxious? I don't understand the point you're trying to make.

Sorry to say it but on the surface it seems to me it's your attitude that needs to alter as it appears to be quite negative.

As to her behaviour what training and exercise does she get?

What types of food do you feed her and has she any health issues?

Pei are one of the most rewarding breeds I know. They're extremely easy to train, very obedient and loyal to their owners and family, Pei however can have some health problems which as a responsible owner you should be aware of.

The Canadian & American Kennel Clubs register all shar pei as Shar Pei, not standard, not mini & not toy, just shar pei. Anyone wanting to breed shar pei should have a long time breeder research their pedigree for dogs that might have died of Amyloidosis. This is a very difficult breed & you should learn how to research a pedigree. I contact everyone I can locate on the 4 generation pedigree & ask them "what was your experience with this bloodline?" Your pei might be clear, carrier or affected for amyloidosis & there in NO test. You must know pedigrees.

Me and my family have had a hard time deciding wether to neuter our 10 month old male Boxer. The vet told us this about fixing your dog. 1- if your dog has a high energy level, it's from either two things, your dog is just naturally happy or their hormone balance is uneven. You can't really tell wether it's the hormones but it's a chance you must take. 2- if your dog is repetitivly running off to find a mate, definitly get her fixed. With male dogs, nuetering is usually smart because it reduces the risk of cancer, but I'm not sure about females. It's hard to tell wether their attitudes will differ, but over all I think it's a good idea. Me and my family will most likely carry on with the procidure.

Spaying a female does very little to her personality. Work with a trainer to correct these issues. Spaying is still advisable. You won't have to worry about all of the neighbor male dogs visiting during her cycle or her cycle herself.

Separation anxiety is a behavior issue. Need to address those issues with your dog. Spaying is the responsible thing to do. Will not fix behavior problems.

It sounds like she might have a small cause of seperation anxiety. You could ask your vet this question and see what he says.
