Ruler of Rome in 50 BCE?

Was this in the time of the empire or the republic??

    50 BC was the epic transition period. In 51 BC Caesar was over in Gaul crushing a rebellion. When he got back in 49 BC he crossed the Rubicon, and became the sole dictator of Rome after victory against Pompey. So, to answer your question, Ruler of Rome in 50 BC was technically the consoles and senate, but less than a year later Rome became an Empire when they placed Caesar as their ruler.

    It was still the Republic.

    Pompey Magnus,with the backing of the Seante,was the effective ruler of Rome at the time.
