Do I have Brown eyes or Hazel eyes?
Let me explain. My eyes look mainly brown to me but there is this very small amount of green in my eyes. No yellow, just green. But it really is not that noticeable unless I stand in the sun or something. You probably could not even tell unless you where looking strait at my eyes. It really is not much but even so does that make my eyes hazel if my eyes have any other colour apart from brown? No matter how small it is?

They would probably be considered brown. Hazel eyes frequently have a lighter green or blue ring around the brown inner circle and appear to shift color.
Hazel eyes are due to a combination of Rayleigh scattering and a moderate amount of melanin in the iris's anterior border layer.[7][25] Hazel eyes often appear to shift in color from a light brown to a golden-green. Hazel mostly consists of brown and green. The dominant color in the eye can either be green or light brown/gold. This is how many people mistake hazel eyes to be amber and vice versa.[48][49][50][51][52][53][54] This can sometimes produce a multicolored iris, i.e., an eye that is light brown/amber near the pupil and charcoal or dark green on the outer part of the iris (and vice versa) when observed in sunlight. Hazel eyes are common in the following countries and regions such as Romania, Czech Republic, Austria, Albania, France, Spain, Bulgaria, Greece, England, Portugal, Chile, Italy, Hungary, Eastern Germany, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, United States, West Asia, Eastern Russia, Estonia, Argentina, Brazil, and Montenegro.
Definitions of the eye color hazel vary: it is sometimes considered to be synonymous with light brown or gold, as in the color of a hazelnut shell.[48][50][53][55]
A large percentage of hazel eyes have a brown ring around the iris, and either green or blue coloring around the outside of the ring. In the image to the right, you can see the darker inner ring surrounded by a lighter outer ring.

You have Hazel eyes, period. I realize this question is 4 years old, but Y!Answers is a source of anecdotal information despite age. :)
Hazel eyes are Brown and Green. If a person has Brown and Green in their Iris.. the eye is Hazel. To say that the Eye is Brown is simply not accurate.
Now, it may be accurate to say .. "Your eyes look light brown/brown to me." - But that isn t the actual color of the eye.
The Green Pigment/Brown Pigment mixture doesn t go away. So if you want to say you have Brown eyes.. that is fine, esp. if that is how they look to people from more than a few feet away. Many people with Hazel eyes classify / tell the Drivers License and police dept. they have Brown eyes when in fact they have Hazel eyes. Many don t even realize it.
This is what happens. The inner ring of pigment is generally Brown,.. the out ring is green. As the pupil dilates (gets bigger) as the eyes adjust to differing light levels, low light, normal ambient light .. etc -- It causes the Pupil (black) to be prominent with the inner ring be the next to follow,.. which is usually Brown. Combine the Dark of black with the brown inner ring being 80% or so of what is shown with a large pupil and the eye is going to look brown/light brown.
It is very easy to tell if one has Hazel eyes, or pure Brown eyes. Get in from of the mirror, and get into bright light. Look as close as possible into the eye itself and if you have Hazel eyes you will see a green outside "ring". (It can be reversed, green inside, with brown on outside.. but it s most commonly the former).
Likewise if you have Brown inner and brown outer rings (they may be different shades of brown, or the same) you have Brown eyes.
The eyes pictured above.. especially the one just above.. Is 100% Hazel. You can see the green outer ring quite defined, with the smaller pupil making it more pronounced in size.

If your eyes look brown till u go outside then look hazel outside. U have hazel eyes you can't say he has brown eyes cause u don't see see the green inside. Would he still have brown eyes when he's outside and you can see the green, no! I have similar eyes inside they look brown. Outside I've had people say they look red, green, hazel.

Brown is basically black ....Hazel eyes are lighter and obviously so unless your under a light of course it would look hazel but i think if it is not noticeable without a light then its brown..

Funnily enough, without actually seeing them, I can't tell for sure
Does it really matter as long as they work?
