Most of the answers given to this question are reasonable but the answer i believe goes beyond what has been presented to date, Yahoo did a poll among it's audience,The actress that won the award got 6% of the vote, Hailee got 49% of the vote with the remaining vote split into small percentages. Are the "experts" who vote perhaps out of touch with reality thinking she's young and will have other chances,Just like they say so and so didn't win last year so let's give the award to that person this year. Well I'll tell you this is a hell of a moronic method of voting for the person who actually had the best performance in their given role,There should be no age discriminationof any kind. There should be no preference goven to someone who is"owed" an award. For a 14 yr old Hailee did a hell of a gutsy performance and no matter how the 'experts" attempt to rationalize it otherwise ,she deserved it.Perhaps they need to make drastic changes on just who votes.I suspect many of the 'Experts' never saw the damn movie to begin with.......

No, but at the moment I felt that Hans Zimmer got fu*%ed for not getting best original score for Inception, then I saw the Social Network and realized how good that score was too. It really could have gone either way. But the Steinfeld girl was excellent, so was True Grit, Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges, once again the Coen Brothers got shafted.

Well it's not up to a public vote. It's the "academy's" decision alone. And the academy is a group of about 6000 people, mostly people who in some way have contributed to making a film. And they apparently felt Melissa Leo deserved the award.

The way the academy feels ...... is that she is young and will have plenty of time for awards in the future....why they believe this is beyond me ...... Tatum O'Neal was only ten when she won .....that was then and this is now....it all depends on who is voting.

No, she'll have more chances in the future, if she continues her movie career and making good movies.
