Performing music in Toronto (beginner)?

I am a student with a singing talent -I wanted to start performing in coffeehouses or doing tiny gigs locally. Where are good places to start? Doesn't have to be paid, but small money would be great too.

thanks

If all you can do is SING then you will have a hard time finding any coffee house gigs.. SINGERS are a DIME A DOZEN, so if a person can't play an instrument.. guitar or piano, especially.. then their opportunities are very limited.

oh, good question. well you should try to get connections at local gigs, and start small, nothing to hard, and make sure you have decent experience.

you can try auditioning for the people that administrate the gig, or the bar/club owner, and you should talk to them. if business goes well, you can ask for payment and usually they will oblige and compensate with decent payment. i dont have a list of any good places to start, but you can google some jazz clubs maybe, or even jazz bars with performers, its about resources. good luck!
