Why are Islanders fans so mad about losing Gillies?

He has one total goal the entire season. He has 0 assists. He doesn't play regular shifts. He's not a future cog of a team that's starting to show some real promise. I could understand if the suspension was to a future star or someone like that, but it's Trevor Gillies. I'm not looking for an angry rant about how the NHL hates the Islanders or anything like that. I'm looking for a real answer that has logical facts as to why your team actually needs Gillies. As I understand it, Zenon Konopka fills the enforcer roll better than Gillies does. As an added plus, Konopka actually has multiple points on the season. So whoever can construct a real argument as to why Gillies needs to be in an Islanders uniform, you'll get 10 easy points.

Also, don't whine about Cal Clutterbuck thinking that's a justification. Clutterbuck's hit was a boarding. I already concede that. I'm not looking for you to vilify another player because you think it makes your guy look better.

Because they look up to him and his outstanding one goal and life lessons. They just don't want to admit someone on their team is a thug who will never learn his lesson and actually play some real hockey.

  • Well, if the Islanders have no fans, as many have pointed out, then who is really mad?

    Yes, that is sarcasm........

Apparently as the only Islanders fan in existence, I'm not mad about his 10 game suspension. he deserved it. The issue is that it is easy to suspend based on the team logo on the front of the sweater and Colin Campbell's inconsistency in handling these issues. Let's see how Colin Campbell handles Milan Lucic's hit on Dominic Moore after Lucic had already cross-check another player head first into the boards ( penalized) earlier in the same game. Lucic is a repeat offender as well, so he should get 10 games also. Oh wait, Campbell's son plays for the Bruins, doesn't he? Why did Carcillo get suspended for starting a fight at the end of a playoff game and not Malkin? Campbell's favoritism is a huge issue and nobody in the league office seems to care or notice.

And don't whine about calling it justification for Clutterbuck? OK, the don't WHINE in advance about the whining. You can't win an argument by trying to eliminate arguments opposite to yours. It's called an Ad Hominem argument, btw. Gillies had every right to go after Clutterbuck ( who leads the league in Hits) for picking on a rookie. Clutterbuck likes to pick on rookies. Gillies just needs to learn another way to do what he does, or he will be watching permanently. Plus , he's a UFA and I don't see him coming back anyway. I would like him for the last Pens game. Plus, Clutterbuc should be suspended 2 games for faking an injury. He played the next game and had 8 hits I believe.

The Islanders can afford to lose him. Guys like Gilllies are cheap and easy to come by, as well as a necessary evil in today's game. Teams have been running Tavares, Okposo, Moulson, DiPietro when healthy (Cooke)and Grabner, etc. for a while now. Capuano is finally instilling some self-respect into this team, as opposed to Scott Gordon who turned them into pansies while he was coach. Capuano is putting the rest of the league on notice that the days of indiscriminately running Islanders players is over! Plus, Jeremy Yablonski is waiting in Bridgeport. If you don't know who the 6 time Canadian Gold Gloves champ is, go to Youtube or Hockeyfights.com

A line of Kenopka, Gillies and Yablonski should keep Matt Cooke and Godard in check next time

the islanders have no fans for one. for 2 gillies has no future, for 3 only one goal. but honestly, why would u like someone like this? i wont judge him, but im also not big of cal cludderbuck either. but there is no need for the tough guy in the nhl. do the wings need a tough guy? no, and neither of the elite teams really have the stereotypical tough guy. the only i tough guys i really respect are neal and ruttu, they actually have value and play without fighting all the time

I don't understand either honestly. He doesn't do anything for the team, if anything he only hurts the team. It would be different if he didn't just come back from a 9 game suspension, but that was what happened.....

Now prepare for me to get a million thumbs down for saying that. Apparently I cannot speak my opinion or the truth because I have Bertuzzi on my team, therefore I cannot speak about anyone getting suspended ever again.

For the islanders, having one goal all season is quite an impressive stat.

Because the Islanders can't get more than 10,000 true Isle fans at home games.. All I see are a bunch of empty seats and people falling asleep at those games.

    Wait...The Islanders have fans?

They should spend less time whining about a useless goon (Gillies) and more about buying tickets.

Gillies is the next best thing, better than Crosby why wouldn't you complain if he got suspended.
