Are baseball fans uncomfortable with the fact that MLB players are the worst pro athletes?

Baseball is by far my favorite sport. I have to admit though, that baseball accommodates the worst athletes. I think we owe some of baseball's appeal to the fact that the old, fat, and slow can and do succeed. What do you think?

(Don't tell that baseball has many great athletes, I know that.)

Update:

--An athlete, dear boy, is one who is skilled in activities involving speed, agility, stamina, and strength. Many baseball players are not outstanding in any of these areas, or perhaps brilliant in one and pitiful in the others. And while they all have a degree of athleticism, I am comparing them to the participants of other major sports.

While Stevie Ray Vaughn had completely inhuman coordination, I don't think too many of us hail him as a hero of sport.

Update 2:

--The references to golf have been noted. I admit that I often (rightly or wrongly) place golf in a bin with shuffleboard and bowling and darts and Monopoly, games of skill and strategy, but not sports.

So you're saying that having almost inhuman coordination is a meaningless element of athleticism? This is kind of an dumb question, honestly. Athleticism comes in a variety of forms.

Also, someone being "old, fat and slow" doesn't make them a poor athlete. That's one of the most ridiculous things I've read today.

You're wrong. While there is room for anyone who can do something well, which means some fat guys can pitch and some old guys can hit, the baseball athlete is the best of the pro athletes. In the 1970s they had a show that pitted people from different sports in track and field. The winner was always a baseball player or a rodeo cowboy. Since there were more baseball players they won more than the rodeo cowboys, but no other field of sport had a winner.

If you had athletes from various sports compete in a triathlon, baseball players would probably be one of the worse performers. That doesn't mean that they are poor athletes though. The hand eye coordination required to hit a major league pitcher is unbelievable

I agree somewhat. One must be in good shape to play baseball but.......it takes a lot more to play other sports. I have played a lot of sports, and baseball tends to be an easier one.

I have just started to play tennis and believe me, it's much tougher than baseball. I know I'll have trouble convincing huge baseball fans and players (like my brother, who has never played tennis), but it's so much more physically demanding. Football, basketball, hockey, tennis, even NASCAR, in my opinion, all must be in better shape than a baseball player.

But baseball still is my favorite sport.

    -------------------

Oh, physically, baseball is down the list. Mentally, it's very tough, third only to golf and tennis. Tennis, in my opinion, is the most difficult sport.

Actually, I change a lot of what I said originally. Combining both physical and mental parts of baseball, it takes a lot.

So I will change my answer to......it all just depends on the sport. They end up being about equal in terms of physical and mental aspects. Basketball, hockey, and football are more physical. Baseball is more mental. Tennis requires both though.

I guess the only thing you can conclude from my inconclusive answer......I kinda like tennis.

Really? Are we saying guys like Sebastian Janikowski are superb atheletes? NFL kickers are some of the worst athletes in pro sports.

"An athlete, dear boy, is one who is skilled in activities involving speed, agility, stamina, and strength" - There are examples in every sport of people who lack some or all of these qualities. See the aforementioned NFL kickers.

Baseball players are better mental athletes than in any other sports but golf and tennis, as well as pretty good physical athletes, thank you very much.

Kind of a dumb question. Do you know what's considered a sport these days? The fat, and slow guys obviously don't excel in quickness and agility, but master other aspects of the game more so than anyone else to get that level, while contributing to a teams success. And you can't be old, fat, and slow and play pro unless you proved yourself as a reliable player over the years that can do your job. I used to love being on base for the #1 clean-up in the league, but mother****er was slow as molasses, but lead in homeruns and rbi. I've always played center, so as a guy with speed, I respect what they do. Once again, do you know what's considered a sport these days?

Good grief, have you looked at what passes for an athlete on the defensive line in football in the past ten years. You've got guys so fat and out of shape they can't stay on the field for more than two plays and have to gasp towards the sidelines.

Listen, baseball is in the mind not the outside body. It is all about your brain. That is how you do good at golf. basketall is also cool. i like football, but i am a wrestler. i do hockey lacrosse and mma. baseball is my least favorite but i like it the most. it is by far the funnest. i love waching the players. they have lots of talent. you have to be young and athletic to qualify for baseball. that is why i hate it. baseball sucks. it is the best sport.

One word: golf. Sure, baseball doesn't produce the "best" athletes, but by old, fat, and slow, I think golf has baseball beat.
