is tension a contact force?

stupid question, but is it?

if a cable is attached to an elevator then it is a contact force yes?

    Anything that isn't a 'distance' force like magnetism or gravity is a contact force, so yes.

    Yes, in fact, the equation for tension is related to newton's second law T = ma, measured in newtons, a unit for Force.
