Snails love beer. Half fill plastic cups with beer and sink them in the soil. The snails will go in there to drink the beer and it gets them drunk so they drown in it.

Theres no real easy way to get rid of them but what i do is put wooden planks down near where im growing plants as they love to hide under cover then everytime i go in the garden i turn the wood over and hey presto they are there so i squish them, another really good method is to have a little pond it doesnt have to be huge just aslong as theres water in it, itll attract frogs and frogs love slugs, plus if you see any snails then squish them and leave them out in the open so the birds can see them, that way theyll come back and go looking for any that are hiding.

    good luck.

the thing with the beer someone said does work, fill a plastic container with cheap beer, and sink it, but the important part is to then put a cover over it, something like a propped up rock, so they can get under easy, but so its "safe and secure"... you can also put salt around your crops. but not actually on the soil, if your crops are on raised beds put a big line of salt around the edge of it, if you put the salt on the soil, it will get washed into the soil and can kill your plants.

if you have a pond, invest in some frogs, cause they eat slugs very happily, this is probably the best method, maybe invest in a half barrel or something and go buy some tadpoles.

There's no easy remedy to dealing with slugs and snails. You have to get out there and get rid of the things yourself.

Old wives tales such as beer traps are of limited value with a large and ever increasing population and throwing salt around will kill the plants you are trying to save.

Here's what we do at the Botanic Gardens:

1 Hunt for them on damp evenings with a torch and dump in a bucket of salt water.

2 Strategically place slates round crops suffering from attack and remove sheltering beasties on a daily basis. These are the conditions they like to lay their eggs, so look out for them and destroy on sight.

3 Place copper ring or tape around the most valuable plants. Or spray WD40 on the rim of the pot, replacing every time it rains.

4 Use a biological control such as Nemaslug on the soil.

If you are prepared to put in the work in your first season you will be able to control them. The cold damp weather in the UK is heaven for mollescs if left alone they will get out of control very quickly..

Best of luck and happy hunting

Hi Sarah, plant garlic around your plants if you want a natural pest deterrent. If that's not good idea for you, try a product called "Seven Dust". Don't know if you have that in UK, but I use it around my outdoor plants & bushes, etc. When I had a garden I used it too (and garlic). This stuff works great and is not too bad of a pesticide as long as you use it carefully.

buy some nematodes as suggested below. When your delivery arrives, follow instructions and water them in as directed

It's salt you want, not sand.

But, I wouldn't recommend actually using it as the salt destroys their little sticky bodies.

put some frogs too to eat it
