Is it possible that some people aren't meant to believe in God, or any god?
If the only way for one to prove a god exist is to tell them that they feel it in their heart, then maybe some people will never feel any presence of a god because they will never get, or understand, that feeling that someone bigger then them self exists....
I used to believe in God. I grew up Presbyterian, but after awhile I had to question why I believed in God in the first place. I couldn't think of a reason. I believed in God because everyone around me did and that's how I was raised. I never really thought about what that kind of omnipotent presence meant to me.... It turns out..it didn't affect me at all.
Aaron Mcclelland: It's not really a question of wanting or not wanting to. If you force yourself to believe in something that you simply don't feel in your heart, then wouldn't you be lying about why you believe?.... I would think people would believe in God, or a god, to experience the joys of existing in a world where there is an immediate purpose, and one is working toward a more worthwhile goal of living a blissful life after death, not to avoid Hell.
Walter: Religion is merely an institution. I'm impartial to groups congregating to worship together. I know I could believe all on my own. It's not something that puts me off to believing.
Beverly: I know it must feel that way to theists, but I've earnestly have searched for faith in God many times. I don't feel my heart has ever been hardened to believing. I've always wanted to, but simply reading the Bible, or going to church, praying or being baptized doesn't make someone a believer. I feel it's something only one person can feel in their own way, and that's it's special and unique.
anthony h: Believe me, it's been a lifetime of deep contemplation. Many days and nights thinking about this all by myself. I couldn't ask to be so lucky as to not have my beliefs be interfered with by others' opinions. This is my choice, but knowing what I know shouldn't make me afraid of what might happen to me when I'm dead.

If you are an ex Presbyterian, you ought to be able to answer your own question.
If the answer bothers you, then the next question is whether or not it is really the case that you don't believe in God. If you don't, then theologians ought to be able to say what they like without it bothering you.

This is your opinion. But ask how you developed it? Was it of YOUR OWN recognisance or people in classes, or other settings that gave you the thoughts. You know, like the rants about there is no God, and prove there is? Well if that is how it all begin with you, you have been duped to say the least.
Maybe you feel now that God does not effect you, maybe you have been convinced or convinced yourself that there is no God because of the reverse of your last statement, "because everyone around you did." Whatever your reasoning, you had to choose and there is always a reckoning for choices, and a confrontation to your personal conflicts.
The effect is being revealed to you daily, it is up close and personal more than it ever will be, and then you draw the last breath, like all of us, you don't know when and reality about your soul really steps in because God does not lie and you will return to Him in the spiritual body. If you consider yourself intelligent enough to "figure out" what you think you have, then you are intelligent enough to see it's undoing and that of yourself.
There is an afterlife, deny it, believe it or not. There is a God and there is a hell. He created you and your soul belongs to Him. Love your soul enough not to destroy it.
If you really believe yourself to be the biggest thing in the universe, you need to check your ego and the propaganda you speak and absorb.
Jesus is waiting. Don't take too long. in the twinkling of an eye dearheart, and it is over just that quick and what you think is not effectual or affectual now, will effect your eternal destination.
In truth, and peace, you must think deeper than this superficial excuse to deny and doubt the creator that made you.
To answer your question with more clarity. God did say in the scriptures that He gave some the spirit of slumber, you are not one of those, because you know God, you studied His word and you turned away having knowledge of Him, so you have no excuse.
Some may not like my answer, but I am not speaking to them, I am speaking to you.
THE FOOL HAS SAID IN HIS HEART THERE IS NO GOD, well God said that, not me, so what will you say to Him about that.

"Meant to" implies a decision behind it, but some people definitely seem "wired" to believe and others not. As you can't just choose what you believe that means a lot of people have no option to join the "right" religion - if there is such a thing.
roy - you are 100% wrong. Well done!

That's what freedom of choice is all about.
Basically it boils down to what you base your faith in. If you just go by what you feel then that may not be very accurate. Different people feel differently. What is the source of your faith? Does it stand up to scrutiny? These are some of the questions you will have to honestly answer.

Very often, it's the definition of 'God' that people are at odds with.
Some don't believe in God at all.
Some believe in God, and that God is a seperate spiritual entity
Some believe that God, humankind, and nature (the natural world/universe) are all one, the same thing.
Religion is for the religious. Non-religion is for the non-religious.

Ian Roxburgh, Professor of Applied Mathematics, Queen Mary College, London, observes: ‘The universe is astonishing uniform. No matter which way we look, the universe has the same constituents in the same proportions. The laws of physics discovered on earth contain arbitrary numbers, like the ratio of an electron to the mass of a proton, which is roughly 1840 to one. But these turn out to be the same in all places at all times. Did a creator arbitrarily choose these numbers? Or must these numbers have the particular uniform value we observe for the universe to exist?’
This fact clearly indicates that the universe is forever under the control of a supreme being- its Creator and Sovereign: God.
‘If there is a God, why is He not visible to us?’ This is a question often put by atheists and nihilists, because they feel that there being no possible answer to this question within the framework of the physical sciences, this in itself is a kind of proof that there is no God. But they forget that we are living in a world where we have no choice but to believe in many things which are quite beyond observation. The neutrino is a case in point. This particle, which is one of the group of particles making up an atom, is believed to have no electric charge in it, and to have no mass. As a scientist would put it, ‘The neutrino is a tiny bundle of nothing.’ Why do we feel compelled to accept the existence of a particle that is a ‘bundle of nothing?’ The reason is that the atom has certain properties which cannot be accounted for in any other way except by that of presuming that a non-particle is contained in the fabric of each atom. One of the amazing properties of the supposed neutrino is its capacity to penetrate any body of mass unhindered. It is claimed that it can pass through the whole of the globe in its progress. In the United States, experiments are underway to harness this property of the neutrino for the benefit of mankind. Scientists believe that if this property of the neutrino can be used, the world of communications will be revolutionized.
‘Seeing’ things in the universe, in a purely optical sense, is so impossible scientifically that scientific philosophers are divided in their opinion as to whether the universe should be regarded as an objective reality or just a subjective phenomenon.
Francis Bacon, the famous philosopher, has rightly said that a little knowledge of science makes man an atheist, but an in-depth study of science makes him a believer in God.
Scientists today are eliminating models of God, but they are not eliminating God. If you translate this into Arabic, it is La illaha illal la, There is no god, (god with a small ‘g’ that is fake god) but God (with a capital ‘G’)."Soon We will show them our signs in the (farthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things?"[Al-Quran 41:53]
Those who refuse to see God’s signs, although they have eyes, and refuse to hear God’s voice, although they have ears, are in the eyes of God, ‘the worst animals’ (8:22). The fate which will be theirs in the world of tomorrow is summed up in the Book of God thus:
“He that gives no heed to my warning shall have a woeful living (in the Hereafter), and will come to Us blind on the Day of Resurrection. ‘My Lord,’ he will say, ‘Why have you brought me blind before You, while I was blessed with sight during my lifetime?’ We will answer, ‘In like manner, Our signs came to you but you forgot them. Likewise, this day you will yourself be forgotten.’
Thus do We reward the transgressor who disbelieves the signs of his Lord. And surely the punishment of the life to come is more terrible and more lasting” (The Final Testament, 20:124-127).

When our faith does not have a framework we cannot know God. Faith without works is dead (James 2:26)(KJV) “I believed in God because everyone around me did and that's how I was raised.” – You were a victim of tradition (John 4:20-22)
“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” (Rom 10:14) – God does not deny any man salvation, but in order to believe, we need to come into contact with the grace and truth of God and reciprocate that likeness through faith
“By grace and faith we see the face of Christ.”
“We love him, because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)

Some people do not believe GOD but themselves only. They have strong faith in themselves. They know to do and what not. But they are very rare and criticized by the religious people.

Are you sure you are actually not believing in God or is your problem with religion? The two things are quite different.
