safe to give cat children's benydryl?
took my regularly front-lined cat to vets about 3 - 4 weeks ago as poorly. Though we are quite stringent with flea/tick treatment, he came back from vets and we noticed he had several adult size fleas on him that evening - can only think he got them from the vets! (annoying!!) - that aside, and despite treating him (again) and house straight away, he has since practically ripped himself bald (he now looks like one of those strange oriental cats!) - seems he has flea allergy dermatitis, I have read that you can give childrens benydryl (1/2 tsp) to help - is this safe/correct? Obviously have thought about asking vets advice but concerned they may advise some hideously expensive treatment (not saying cat is not worth it but bit skint after last vets bill!!) - advice please - thanks - he is a lovely little Bi-colour (at least he was 'bi-colour' when he had fur!!!)

No you cannot give your cat medication for humans without first consulting your vet. What I would do is phone and speak to your vet explaining the situation to them and they can then advise over the phone if this is safe to give to your cat and they will also advise of the correct dosage as the dosage for humans is far greater than the dosage you would give to an animal.
Good luck

you can use anti allergy tablets, would be easier getting that down a cat than syrup medicine.
we used piriton for our dog - shes allergic to dust mites (and shes a small terrier) half a tablet to see how the cat goes....but dont quote me on it. Your vet can also give you anti allergy tablets for around £4, but youve to pay for the consultation before
you can also get antibacterial dry shampoo, that might stop the itching and clear up any sores....failing that you can try to bath him in episoothe (about £8 from the vets)....good luck with that!!!
try a trip to pets at home - get yourself Otodex skin cream its got numbing properties so it will stop the cat scratching his infected areas. again we use this on our dog.

NO - unless you want a dead cat. Most human meds are toxic to cats - take the cat to the vet to be treated properly.

Yes, it is correct. You do not want to exceed 1mg of benydryl per pound of your pet.

It's worth a try. What's the worst that can happen? LOL
