Ok so the reason this is happening is because the explorer. exe file is not loading on your pc at startup which is the reason why the desktop is not visible but thee mouse pointer is ......

so there are 3 things you can do ...

    1. Permanent solution ....

insert the disc with which you installed windows ..... boot it ... in options select repair windows and it will automatically replace the damaged files in your system .....

    2. also permanent ...

if you have a system restore point saved in your computer before this happened then you can choose system restore , which is in accessories , under system .... or you can just search for it in the search bar ...

their select the restore point and your system will be back to wat it was when the restore point was created ...

    3. temporary ...

what you can do is that every time you open windows ... just press ctrl + alt + del. and open task manager ....

there under the FILE tab .... choose RUN

here type explorer.exe and click on run .....

Now if the file is present and not deleted some how then you will see your desktop appear immediately ... but know this you will have to do this every time you start up windows ......

hi epic answers, place your vista startup diskett in the dvd burner and reboot when you see your windows logo start tapping f12 scrol down to boot from usb cdrom and start tapping any key until you see the scan begin then stop tapping. you will come to install but what we want to do is to in the lower left part of that screen hit repair if you see your drivers then hit next and there at the top of your options you see repair check out the diagnoses and any other information and learn about your system and when you are done hit restart. when you see your windows logo start tapping f8 scrol down to last good configuration (advance) when you get to your desktop hit start>settings>control panel and hit internet options there delete your history and cookies now exit back to desktop and hit start>programs>accessories>system tools scrol down to system restore set your own restore date set it for febuary 10, 2011 now your computer is restore & reboot. good luck hope i was helpful to you

Source(s): when that is done then go back once more and defragment let it complete properly it is good for your computer. now if you still have the problem then i recommend that you take your computer tower and all of your software and let him diagnose your problem. now dig this sometimes your windows drivers begins to get stale in your computer so i recommend an update to windows 7 beta run the windows 7 beta advisor and it will recommend what copy that you should buy. good question

Have you tried booting into safe mode, by pressing F8 at startup?

You might need to restore it to factory settings but you would lose all your personal files.

    What`s the name and model?

    EDIT.

If you`ve anything plugged into usb ports apart from keyboard and mouse unplug them, this worked for someone on a forum I`ve just been looking at.
