Hi,
There's no harm trying to use a Windows 7 recovery disc if you cannot create a Vista one.
But your best bet may be to create a Linux Live CD or USB disk using your sister's PC. You can use this CD or USB disk to boot your PC and gain access to your files. Backup your files and bookmarks to an external hard disk (or to another PC over a network).
Once you have a backup of your files you can then wipe the PC clean by installing Windows 7 and you can wipe those hard disk partitions in the process too. The end result should be one 500 GB hard disk (C: Drive) with a nice clean Windows 7 install.

Let me know if you have any problems.

1. You can not use Recovery discs (XP or Win 7) that were made for other computers. You need a Windows installation disc.
2 Either XP or Windows 7 will run on your PC. I have been using Windows 7 satisfactorily on a PC that has the P965 chipset (same as on your HP Pavilion).
If you need to recover important files on your hard drive, remove it. Either install it in another PC as secondary drive or put it in an enclosure that connects to USB port.

I additionally would not recommend which you circulate lower back to XP or Vista. perhaps some settings on your domicile windows 7 have been tousled. Do you have a valid product key for that? If confident, a clean reinstall employing the comparable product key will restoration it. i assume your son has the installer DVD with him. in any different case, acquire from Microsoft.
