Sears Kenmore Coldspot fridge-freezer not working properly?

I have a Sears Kenmore Coldspot side-by-side fridge and freezer that are (1) not making ice and not keeping things cold enough.

It was mfd in 3-90. Type is 25SSA90. Model # is 106.9505780.

S/N SX1327282.

The freezer is running at about 30 F vs. 3-5 F and I've got the dial on max cold.

The fridge is running at 48-50 F vs. 35-38 F goal and I've turned the dial up but not to max.

During the past couple days the icemaker is NOT making ice.

The water dispenser is working alright and the ice dispenser is working alright. These are both in the freezer door.

I've done a thorough cleaning of the coils both in front and rear and don't see anything wrong. The fan is running fine.

Need some thoughts on how to proceed...

thanks,

Adrian

Update:

I have checked the freezer section and there is no ice block. The compressor discharge line is smaller and quite hot and the suction is just cool. I understand the freezer section on this unit has to be at a temp in the 15-20 F range for the icemaker to work properly and it's running in low 30s.

I'm going to replace the unit...just trying to figure out which one to go with.

Since the unit is 21 yrs old i suspect that either the valves are worn out or it has developed a freon leak some where within the system. One of the simplest ways to check the internal operation of your unit without having to put a set of Gage's on it would be to feel the lines coming out of your compressor when the unit is running. The discharge should be hot and the suction line should be cool to cold. The suction line is a bit larger that the discharge line. If you do not feel this temperature difference on the lines when the compressor is running then you have internal problems. Either the valves are worn or there is a loss of freon in the system. And at the age of the unit it could easily be one or the other. A compressor replacement at your units age is not what i would recommend . And a freon leak can damage the valves on your compressor. A freon leak can be repaired but only if it is in a location that the technician can get to. But the cost of repair on such an old unit is not advisable. I recommend replacement of unit. It has given you great service for quite a few years but it's time to up-grade.

when moving a fridge the gases need to settle. If you do not allow it to sit upright for at least 24 hours after moving to new location you can break the fridge. I am sorry but this sounds like what u have done. You did not wait the alotted time after moving it.

If you have frost build-up on the back wall of the freezer, you may hav a bad defrost heater, defrost timer.

  • Inspect the evaporator for ice build up,If u have ice in there u might have a bad defrost heater.
