  • why coudn't Yahoo Answers just leave the old faceplate alone?

This new set of screens is not only frustrating it doesn't allow you to answer without seeing the other answers and it doesn't give the top contributors the credit they deserve for spending the time and effort to help the posters. I really liked the green layout and I think a lot of others did too.

Yahoo Answers....you broke something that didn't need fixing.

  • How to get an AcerScan 620PT "Prisa" to work on a computer with XP Pro O/S?

I have the above scanner and a Dell Optiplex computer with Windows XP Pro SP 3 O/S. It is a parallel port scanner and all connections have been made correctly. I tried installing with the original installation disk + driver CD. It looks like it's downloading but the computer doesn't recognize the scanner. I think it's because the CD doesn't have an XP driver Searching the web has been frustrating to say the least. This scanner worked fine with Win 95 and 98 SE. Hope somebody out there can get me on the right track.

  • Summation of an alternating series of squares?

There is a problem that asks that you find the sum of squares from 1 to n of the series:

    (1^2-2^2+3^2-4^2+5^2-6^2+ ... -(n-1)^2+n^2).

I can find the answer by using an alternating series sum but am looking for something that may be broadly applicable and easy to understand.

    Any help appreciated---

    BTW I know Sum(n^2) from 1 to n = n^3/3 + n^2/2 + n/6.

  • Why won't DVD-RW's won't play on my computer?

I have a number of DVD-RW's that I've recorded TV programs on and I can play them on my TV using the same Toshiba DVD recorder/player but none will play on my Dell Laptop Studio 17 w/Windows 7 or on another Dell Laptop 1520 with the previous version of Windows. What can I do to view these on my computer?

Also, if I want to record over some of these DVD-RW's what do I need to do erase the old stuff??

    Thanks in advance.

  • Given the following information about p(x) find a and b. Then use to find slopes in interval [0,16]?

Let p(x) be continuous and differentiable.

    p(x) = 16a/sqrt(x) when x > 4

    p(x) = bx^2 + 2x + 56 when x </= 4

    Prove that a = and b = .

Then, using those values of a and b find the value(s) of x in the interval [0,16] at which the instantaneous slope equals the average slope.

  • Dell Dimension 8200 graphics card problem?

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 desktop-- March, 2002 vintage.

Came with 512MB PC800 RDRAM but have upgraded to 1GB over the years.

Came with Pentium 4 1.8 GHz processor...have upgraded to 2.8 GHz over the years.

Think it is a 400 FSB unit....but how to verify??

The current graphics card is a 64MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX.

Just recently on startup I've been getting weird graphics on the monitor which is

a Sony Trinitron 19". I can't get to a screen will let me access Windows XP Pro SP3.

Assuming it was the graphics card I interfaced another desktop that I have to the same

monitor and was able to go to Win XP without problems.

I tried cleaning the video card and vacuuming the input slot just in case there may have been a minor dust related problem but upon retry...getting the same weird stuff.

I've got a lot of info on this machine and want some advice as to what graphics card I should purchase and where. Any advice is appreciated and if there are additional tech specs I need to supply just let me know.

  • If I default on a mortgage what happens to my credit?

OK, so I have a 5 yr ARM on some property in NC mountains. Due to recession property is worth way less than we paid for it several years ago. Selling it seems like a long term proposition. I'm living on a fixed income and I'm considering letting the lending institution take it (defaulting on the loan) but wondering what impact that will have on future purchases...like cars, etc.?? My current credit score is EXCELLENT.

    Any practical advice is welcome.

  • Why was a question deleted almost immediately after posting?

OK, a person named Devin posted a 3 part trig question on Friday. I spent between 15 and 30 minutes answering all 3 questions and then tried to submit....got "Yahoo Answers is not Available".

So, I tried to submit several times during the next few hrs and got the same response. Then did a search and after WAY TOO MUCH SEARCHING---found out the question had been DELETED! What is up with that???? If a question is deleted folks attempting to answer it should be notified immediately and the poster should not be deleting a question they just posted...that did not violate any of the guidelines. This is not the first time this has happened.

  • Picasa 3.9 problem with Dell Studio 17 and Windows 7 64 bit OS?

I can load the software for this upgrade on this laptop but when I interface digital camera via the standard USB connector cable it locks up the computer...won't recognize an external source of photos and none of the buttons will do anything. Have to resort to CTRL+ ALT+DELETE to get it off the computer. I have two other computers that have a v3.8 that work just fine--one with XP Pro and the other with VISTA. I've tried removing the v3.9 and downloading a late build of v3.8 but that doesn't seem to work either. HELP!!!

  • My 16+ yr old Aussie has begun eating grass, dirt, gravel and trying to chew asphalt..what gives?

I have a 16+ yr old Aussie red merle. Her hips were bad from birth but with caring and exercise she has made it thus far. Recently she fell part way down a flight of stairs at our home and for the next several days was off her vet recommended food, very passive, and stools were very dark..almost black. Coincident with this event she started eating grass, dirt, gravel when she got the chance and has even progressed to licking and trying to chew the asphalt in parking lots and concrete in our garage. Her stools have returned to normal color and she has reactivated but still this habit.... I know puppies like to eat lots of things..but this is an OLD dog. Any ideas, thoughts appreciated.

  • Electronegativity---what is the basis for the Pauling and others' ratings?

OK. Mostly we see the Pauling ratings for EN..but there are a few others...F is rated as highest and Cs is the lowest and it's all about propensity for giving vs. wanting electrons....but why the ranking scale from 0-4? How was this arrived at and what are the latest guidelines determining ionic vs. polar covalent vs. non-polar covalent?? Thanks for any guidance in advance.

  • In a given Period, the atomic radius decreases from left to right? Why?

OK, I have a very inquisitive general chem student and we were discussing atomic radii trends in the Periodic Table. We know that the radius decreases from L to R in a given period and my explanation was that the number of protons increases and that electrons being added are being done so into regions of low density from previous occupied orbitals...in other words something like close packing...can anyone make this a little clearer?? Better analogy??

  • What force(s) cause protons to be compacted in the nucleus of an atom?

Ok. All models of the atom show protons and neutrons compacted in the nucleus and this nucleus is surrounded by electrons in different quantum mechanical levels which have orbitals like s, p, d and f. Now in the ground state the atom is electrically neutral because it has the same number of protons and electrons. My question, or rather a student of mine's question, is " since all the protons have positive charges and like charges repel how can these protons be compacted in the nucleus of the atom?" Is it gravity? subatomic particle related or what?

  • Sears Kenmore Coldspot fridge-freezer not working properly?

I have a Sears Kenmore Coldspot side-by-side fridge and freezer that are (1) not making ice and not keeping things cold enough.

It was mfd in 3-90. Type is 25SSA90. Model # is 106.9505780.

    S/N SX1327282.

The freezer is running at about 30 F vs. 3-5 F and I've got the dial on max cold.

The fridge is running at 48-50 F vs. 35-38 F goal and I've turned the dial up but not to max.

During the past couple days the icemaker is NOT making ice.

The water dispenser is working alright and the ice dispenser is working alright. These are both in the freezer door.

I've done a thorough cleaning of the coils both in front and rear and don't see anything wrong. The fan is running fine.

Need some thoughts on how to proceed...

    thanks,

    Adrian
