Best and Trusted Free Anti Virus programs on the market are:

    - AVG Anti-Virus Free

    - avast! Free Antivirus

    http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download

    - Avira AntiVir Personal

    http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

    - Panda Cloud AntiVirus

    - PC Tools AntiVirus Free

    - Microsoft Security Essentials

Note: If you use more than one secondary antivirus program, make sure you're only running one at a time. If these programs ever ask you if you would like to turn on active protection, as many of them will do, click "No."

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C

    First open CCleaner

Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.

To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:

Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.

Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.

afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.

The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.

If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)

The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).

Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.

Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

    Hello.

Personally I would recommend Super Anti-Spyware. I have used this software for 3 years now and have never loved any other free or paid anti-virus that I have ever tried. There are 4 versions of this software: Free Version, Portable Version, Trial Version, and the Full Version. I will offer a link to the Free Version at the bottom of the page.

    ---Some Pros and Cons---

    Pros:

    - Very Quick Scanner

    - Scans all Registry, Memory, and Hard Drive Files

    - Always an update available (Which means it is always up to date on the latest threats)

    - Easy on your computer

    - Reputable, and safe

    - 100% Free

    Cons:

    - No Firewall

    - No System Optimizer

    ---Compared to Other AV Softwares---

Compared to other Anti-Viruses, I think it is better. Compared to AVG Free, and Microsoft Security Essentials, Super Anti-Spyware is easier on your computer, more up-to-date, way lighter on your computer so it doesn't use all of your system resources, and then, of course, it's free for life.

When I used AVG, it disabled my internet connection to my Desktop computer, so it was uninstalled, it disabled my other Anti-Virus softwares so it was the only one running, it slowed my computer down, never detected anything, and was never up to date, while Super Anti-Spyware detects threats Norton 360 can't detect, for instance, the Trojan that was on my laptop wasn't found by my other 3 AV softwares, the only one that found it was Super Anti-Spyware.

I hope this helped! Enjoy, and I hope you chose the right AV for you and your computer.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com/

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

AVG or Avira are both great, Avira is a tad annoying with pop ups to buy the upgraded version, but avira is better than AVG, i use AVG cause its less annoying

  • 1 decade ago

my brother used Avira, but I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.

    Throw in SUPERAntispyware or Malwarebytes.

I use Malware bytes and Microsoft security essentials.

For a anti-virus, they are pretty good at finding infected files.

    I use AVG on Windows.

But I am mostly on Linux so I don't have to worry at all.
