Personal experiences with MTG or mane/tail growing? ?

I would like to grow both of my mares' manes out. The one mare, I shaved it off, because I wanted a fresh start. And the other rubs hers off in the fence. I also want a more thick and full looking tail on both of them. The flies were horrid last summer, and they lost a lot of the thickness and length from the swatting.

My palomino mare ( fence rubbing one ) needs a thicker tail and a long mane for the rodeo we are doing, I want her to look her best.

I've heard from a few different people that if I buy a neck slinky and a tail bag, than saturate the mane and tail in MTG, than it would grow nice, and fast.

Is this true? Will it work? How long do I leave the tail bag and slinky on for? Do I take it off for daily grooming? Or do I leave it on?

Please feel free to share any personal experiences that you've had with MTG, or any stories about your horse. :)

I don't like MTG at all. It's never helped me and it smells and looks like bacon grease. I use it for this strange rub/cut that my horse has. Feeding your horse minerals will help the mane and tail grow really well. I stuck one of my horses on Hoffman's minerals during her pregnancy and her tail grew like a weed. It could have also been the fact that I was not brushing her tail either. You could also try the Mega-Tek Equine Re-builder. It's a conditioner that helps thicken the hair. At work we use it for the show dogs and it keeps their coats ridiculously thick.

Use a tail bag too. Wash the tail nicely, braid it, and slip it into a tail bag. You can leave it on all the time, and if you want take it off during grooming or riding. I don't use them but I know several people who do, and they have very nice tails.

Hair is a collection of dead cells. The only living part is the follicle or root and nothing you put on the mane or tail will make it grow quicker or fuller. Conditioners can help maintain the hair as they make it easier to get tangles out without pulling hair out as well. Never use a stiff brush or a plastic brush intended for human hair or a comb. Always use a body brush with soft bristles as this is less likely to break the hair.

You can, however, improve things in the long run by making sure she has a good balanced diet and dealing with the cause of the mane and tail rubbing. It sounds like sweet itch. If proprietary fly repellents and sweet itch treatments don't work, speak to your vet about the problem. Feeding 100% pure garlic powder at the manufacturer's recommended dose will build up a presence in the horse's body and make him less enticing to flies, midges, etc., and help avoid the sweet itch. But you do have to feed it all year round, not just in the summer, so the repellent action builds up.

It isn't an accident that horses have long manes and tails and it's actually cruel to tie up the mane and tail in a bag or anything else as this is the horse's only natural defence against biting insects.

I have two horses and both are on the garlic treatment. I helped look after my gelding for the summer before I bought him and he was plagued terribly with flies so when I bought him in the September I immediately started him on daily garlic and the next summer we hardly saw a fly on him and it has remained so for nearly 11 years. My other horse came to me with the information that she had chronic sweet itch. I put her on garlic and had no problems at all. She then went to be a companion horse with a colleague's gelding. My colleague didn't believe that garlic was any good and stopped it. The sweet itch came back. She doesn't have it now because I insisted she went back on the garlic. Don't sneer at the simple remedies.

Everybody here is on track. MTG doesn't work on the hair in the mane and tail itself, it works by rubbing it into the skin on the tail bone and the neck. Nothing will get you results in a month or two. But MTG has a good track record of improved growth and fullness. I am using it now on a mustang that pulled his tail hairs out to the point that he looks like a bobbed draft horse. So all of your ideas will help. However, no miracle will occur. It will still take several months to grow back a few inches.

My experience with MTG has been nothing but positive. I work it in to the base of the mane and tail and then rub the excess through out the rest of it. It does smell horrible but it works really well. Just make sure you apply it in the evening. Some horses have very sensitive skin (like mine) and if it is applied in the middle of the day the sunlight will cause the sulfur to burn and irritate the skin. Good luck!

I used it before. It smells like campfire (thanks to sulfur).

I used it on my gelding's tail when I first bought him because the fall before I bought him (I got him late winter/early spring) his entire tail was ripped off by a stallion, so when I bought him his tail wasn't that long. I can't tell if it grew "faster" or not, but it grew in nicely.

So, I didn't keep buying it. Some people swear by it, and some people call it crap. I'm stuck in the middle. I think it helped in the summer to not attract bugs with a pretty fragrance, so that is a plus. Also, it's a good product to have on hand for any skin problem on horses. So, it is a multi-purpose product.

I would use the MTG, tail bag etc, and for extra results find a Skin & Coat supplement, which should help hair growth in general (plus great feet!). But the supplement is just extra, but I think it does help.

Well if the mane is short and rubbed off I would shorten it all to one length...or roach it. As I had a gelding that had a big thick and long mane that was down to his shoulder when he started to stick his head through the fence and rubbed areas out....so I roached it and it took a year to get back past his neck.....and almost all of our horses have long manes past their necks.

I have never used MTG, all I have done is braid them everday, unbraid them and condition and spray show sheen on the mane as I wont have to brush it. Then I put all my barrel horses tails in tail bags and leave them in until I run then take them out. And don't brush it everday, just run your fingers through it and that is what I use the Show Sheen for as it slicks the hairs and they don't tangle. Plus they are braided. But re-braid it everyday so it doesn't get all messy as then hairs start to break off and it gets ratty looking.

Technically, it doesn't make it grow faster. However, it did make my mare's tail grow. She also rubbed her tail on the fence and broke all of her hair off. MTG soothes the itch, so she doesn't scratch and break off her tail hair.

To prevent breakage, use MTG to prevent itch. When you brush out her tail, work a detangler in first to prevent breakage. Then, braid the mane or tail (loosely). This prevents the tail from getting tangled and then getting broken when you brush it out.

The best way to get good, fast hair growth is to make sure that the horse is getting excellent nutrition (a horse's coat is a direct representation of the nutrition he is getting). Make sure they are getting all of the vitamins they need.

Tail bagging needs to be redone every three days with a day off in between to rest the hair follicles. I wouldn't do the slinky during turnout as they tear easily. I use TCB. It works great for me. I buy it at the local drugstore. It is used by Black people in their hair. Don't know what for. But I do know that it moisturizes very well and stops the itch also makes it grow and fast too.

I've had very good experiences with it.

My show pony's tail somehow went missing so we've been using it to help it grow.

I'm not sure in really makes it grow faster, but it makes it grow thicker.
